Although I laugh at those that have five copies of Neon Genesis Evangelion, I’ve always wondered why certain anime fans insist on buying the latest release of a show, despite that they may own the show already. And now that there are distributors re-releasing anime that have been lost by other companies (i.e., Slayers, Love Hina, Great Teacher Onizuka), curiosity is really starting to get to me. I, for one, refuse to buy an anime more than once. I already own Slayers. I will not buy Funimation’s release. My brother owns one Neon Genesis Evangelion box set. I have one Vision of Escaflowne box set. Shocking, isn’t it? Perhaps I’m a Scrooge, but surely, the words “re-mastered” and “limited edition item” can’t make that much of a difference? So my question is, why double-dip?

Note: I am not referring to those that “upgrade” their collection by replacing obsolete media with another (i.e., replacing VHS with DVDs). That is different.

I guess it comes with more features than the originally. When anime first came out on DVD they didn't have many bonus features. I don't buy two of the same anime. I'm also too cheap to upgrade (my VCR works perfectly)

Umm, the only series that I've 'double-dipped' for has been Evangelion. At one point, I had the series on VCD, VHS, & DVD x 3 (original Japanese, the original R1 release, & then the R1 Platinum Edition - I nearly got the Japanese R2 LE release of the Platinum Edition too, but I failed to put in my pre-order in time). I even have the End of Evangelion movie on LD, but that was for all the freebies that came with the boxset, as opposed to the movie itself.

I also have the Utena TV series & movie as both R2 Japanese & R1 DVD releases, & the same is true for the OAV series Tatakae! Iczer-1.

Why do I do this? For the most part, I'm an extremely impatient anime-watcher. It took Software Sculpters five years to release the Utena TV in it's entirety, & in between that time, I ended up importing the R2 Japanese release. I am not fluent in Japanese, but I managed to find scripts for all the episodes online, so I watched episodes 14-39 in raw Japanese with the scripts printed off. When the rest of the series finally did get a R1 release, I bought them so that I could discard the paper scripts. I bought the R2 release of Tatakae! Iczer-1 because I didn't think that such an old title would get the DVD treatment in the west, so when Anime Works released the OAV on DVD, I snapped that up too.

As to why I have so many versions of Evangelion, umm, I blame that on my obsessive nature, heh. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

Ask Kona-chan of Lucky Star.

One must have three copies of each item.
One to use.
One to keep mint.
One to act as backup.

I replaced my Anime Legends Escaflowne with the Limited edition version because I wanted the Black Escaflowne figure.

I replaced my Boogiepop Phantom Brick with the newer thinpak as it was on offer and I wanted the movie anyway.

I have 3 copies of Akira, the UK release with the original and remastered versions that I bought first, the Geneon release with CD soundtrack and the Limited Edition Tin for the re-dub.

I replaced my Galaxy Angel complete collection with the Artbox and singles because I wanted the figure set that came with the artbox.

The only thing I want to replace at the minute is my old Manga releases of the Patlabor Movies with the new BV releases.

Then there is the space issue. People buy the indivduals because they don't want to wait for the box set but when their shelves get too crowded, they will go and buy the thinpacs to get more room. Some of us have a very finite amount of space.

I haven't double dipped aside from occasionally getting a second volume 1 of a series (because I was able to get the vol 1+artbox for extremely cheap later.)

However, should Sailor Moon find itself relicensed and remastered, I would double-dip for that in a heartbeat, particularly for the first two seasons. I'm not as picky as some about video and audio issues, but damn, it sounded liked they were speaking in tin cans! R was a little better, but the audio for the first season was brutal.

Otherwise, I'm not one for double-dipping. But if you've got the money and the desire to collect [i]everything[i] related to a particular series, I don't see anything wrong with it. I might eventually attempt to purchase second copies of all my artbooks just so I can provide better protection to one set of copies while the other set can be out for show and for flipping through.

I've double- and tripple-dipped but afaicr these have always been discs from different regions.
I think the only anime I've bought two different versions of from the same region are the VHS and DVD versions of the Digimon movie and the first (and only) episodes of Digimon and Cardcaptors that were released in the UK (these were all either released first on VHS and later on DVD or purchased before I had a DVD player).
When they announced the platinum version of Evangelion I sold my original DVDs, although I still haven't bought the platinum version (I will be getting the LE box set from Amazon, assuming it is stil available when I finally get the vouchers I've been owed at work since last October).
I did rebut Hellsing when they released the first collected edition, but that was only because MVM had it stupendously mispriced and I then sold the singles.

I have bought a few series as singles to replace collections, like with Angelic Layer, Pretear, and SaiKano. That was all to get extras. I also bought Cowboy Bebop Remix because my original discs got stolen Sad But I haven't done any extensive rebuying or double-dipping. I guess 2003 was a good time to get into anime, as there were no more VHS releases by that point and the original EVA DVDs had long been released, so when it came time for me to watch the series, the Platinum discs were the only thing I had to get.

Remastering can make a difference though -- I never had the CPM Slayers sets, but word is that their A/V quality was just abysmal. Since Funi is rereleasing it for cheap with supposedly better masters, I can see how it would be worth it. And if Funi does redub Love Hina, I can see a definite value-add reason to buy it again.

IMO, double-dipping isn't worth the money... if I buy the show once, I don't need to buy it again. Upgrading is one thing (I've done so several times) but to buy it again just for different cover art or a minor technical change isn't worth it for me.

But you can always do the thinpacking yourself which would cost a lot less then double-dipping.

This was my favorite rerelease since those boxes are just gorgeous. The original release was miles apart from the BVUSA. The books, and extra DVD is also really nice. My only complaint is that They should have waited a year and released a HD version with all of the physical extras, so we don't have to buy the series once again a year later.

When the preorder of Blu-Ray GITS SSS was announced at TRSI I preordered it (that hour) along with the special tin edition. I'm looking forward to the new HD releases, but wished that they had the same extras/tins/books/boxes as their standard definition counterparts.

I jumped to the Eva Platinum edition. The visual quality is so much better than the original. I also kept the originals since they have a Spanish and French tracks which is fun.

I also jumped on the Bebop Remix DVDs. These only really have a better audio but it is really well mixed, and who doesn't love Bebop. The new audio commentary and interviews are also nice, and there are no features (besides a new menu screen) that are missing from the original. I gave my originals to my sister.

I've been slowing down on buying rereleases on standard definition since most A list titles will hopefully get HD releases soon.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. I was very disappointed that ADV didn't remaster the audio on the two season when they released them.

I'd buy any new Sailor Moon in a heart beat. No reason...purely just because!

I replaced my partial set of Cowboy Bebop with the Remix set to get the new audio and extras. I gave my sister my partial set of Trigun, knowing full well I'll buy the Remix version of that. For those it didn't matter too much, since it'd be easier to get new Remix stuff instead of hunting down the older releases. Also, on occasion, I've re-bought single volumes of a series to get artboxes, or because it was available in a boxset that was cheaper than buying what singles I needed.

That's about it, really... I don't see myself rebuying something I already own in full for remastered something-or-other, extras, goodies, etc. The extras would have to be worth the price of the set... which just don't happen.

Media Fanboyism. Excessive "dedication" to a specific media item. Particularly for an older series, they cannot accept the fact that fandom for their show is over.

I would only double dip for Magazines or Manga. But i only done so if one was destroyed or beat up. Now i want to find back issues of shojo beat since some issues got loved a bit too much.
