The dub went with a Corsican pronunciation of Mireille's name, since that's where she's from. For some reason, people find this to be wildly inappropriate. #dubsareoveranalyzedtohellandback |

first time watching a comparison video about anime :/
usually just games--- PS2 vs PS3 or PS3 vs PS4/Xbox one etc.. I thought there's already an HD version for Noir though... also, it's part of the triology or something right? girls with guns? Madlax and El Cazador ? and others |

The ADV dub went with a mispronunciation, as if Mireille is spelled Mirielle. The Corsican pronunciation is substantially the same as the Spanish, French, and Italian pronunciations. The only real differences are how they treat the R. |

Well, I can't say that HD rock stair texture details are enough to make me double-dip, but at least it doesn't look worse than DVD. Though IIRC my DVDs (1st ADV thinpack, likely the same authoring as the original singles) do suffer from noticeable interlacing, particularly on muzzle flashes.

I think that the fact of, "if," being present in this paragraph suggests that you're being too sure of yourself. There have been a few claims about Corsican phonology, but nobody seems to be doing any rudimentary research. Sources are sparse, which is unsurprising, but the Wikipedia page on Corsican leads to another about the Corsican Alphabet as well as page about it on a different site and what appears to be a slightly more extensive description of the language. That last link appears to be the best source readily available (Oh, if I still had access to a university research library...) and has a section on phonology, but it is in French, which I cannot read. However, if also follows certain familiar formats and uses the international phonetic alphabet, which I can read. (N.b. transcriptions below are in X-SAMPA) It appears that: 1. <ll> is pronounced as a geminate /l:/ 2. <ei> is pronounced /ej/ 3. Final <e> is pronounced /E/. My best guess, given the small amount of time I applied to this and my lack of proficiency in French, is that Mireille should be pronounced approximately /mirejllE/. (Something like me-ray-leh, that last vowel being as in pet) That sounds more 'Italian' to my ear, which seems about right. I don't have a lot of confidence in this suggestion because of my limitations. The Japanese dub seems to have approximated the French pronunciation and the English to have tried, but not succeeded, in approximating the Corsican one. Even though I am concurring that it is in error, I nevertheless remain unperturbed by it, as I wrote earlier. My purpose was neither to demonstrate who was right and wrong nor to necessarily be exactly right myself, but to put this discussion on some kind of factual ground, which was otherwise unaccountably absent. |

Several mistakes in this post. Number one, none of those languages you mentioned have the same pronunciations, so it's not like "Mireile" would sound the same in any of those languages. Number two, Mirelle is an French/Occitan name and is not used in Italy, Spain or in ethnic Corsicans, so that's not even a proper Corsican name. Three, ethnic Corsicans ARE NOT FRENCH! THEY ARE ITALIAN! ITALIAN! Corsicans DON'T HAVE French names. Corsican is a more conservative form of Tuscan. It also retains the letters modern Italian has dropped. Finally, the name can't be pronounced correctly in Japanese, since Japanese doesn't have a clear L/R sound, not is "Mireiyu" how it is pronounced in French or Occitan. Is pronunciation a big deal? Why aren't people complaining that an ethnic Corsican has a French name? Corsicans aren't French, nor do they have French names. Why aren't people complaining that Mireille doesn't have a Tuscan name? |

Complaining about dub pronunciation choices along with complaining about translation choice in the sub is part of an ongoing game of "Gotcha" or one up man ship. It allows people to collect points and feel superior to Funimation or Sentai. Some people even pursue it to the point of claiming the commercial release is "spoiled" for them. It is basically pointless. As to why a Corsican native would have a French name, her father spent time in France and she is named for a former lover. He simply told the mother he was fond of the name. Granted this is speculation on my part. It is no more far fetched than the idea that the successor to a group of assassins located in a hidden French mountain valley should be an amnesiac Japanese girl dumped in Japan for unexplained reasons. Sometimes it doesn't pay to look too closely into some aspects of the plot. |

I still have the original art box with the dvd releases. Still display that baby proudly. This though will look nice right next to it. I am particular with what older series I double dip for as they get re-released now a days. This show was a favorite for me so it makes the cut. The sound track remains one of my favorite to this day.

Noir certainly has a great soundtrack. From it I have only heard the instrumental track "Romance" and the vocal tracks "Canta Per Me" and "Salva Nos" live (https://canta-per-me.net/live-events/2013-yk10-kaji-fest/). I'm still hopeful of hearing Chiaki Ishikawa singing "Indio" live some day. |

I've never had a problem with the pronunciation of Mireille's name in the English dub. It sounds like a more or less phonetically correct French pronunciation: Mee-rei-elle. Monica Rial tends more towards an 'ee' sound than an 'eh' sound in the middle syllable, but I didn't think it was so far off to be outside the realm of differences in pronunciation from one person to another.

The fixes are alot more than color corrections, the youtube video just doesn't show it properly. I've watched through the Japanese release and the biggest fix was removing the cell vibrations in the originals particularly in still shots.
