Rakugo: Best first episode of the season. If it continues like this, it'll probably turn out to be the best show around. The camera work was great during the Rakugo presentations, the characters were believable, and the rakugo itself was entertaining: I actually laughed at some parts of the Dekigoko story: it felt like those characters were really there, which is, I believe, the effect rakugo should give.
This is a show I wasn't expecting, but I'm glad I watched it.

Seems like the biggest complainants of Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn is how retro it is. An old timer like me has no problem with that anyway. After all that is why I got into anime so long ago.
I am reading the English version manga, and I like it. Hopefully, the art isn't as bad as some of the reviewers have stated.

What about stop watching everything else and start Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju? What about do it now? I promise you... you will not be ripped off.
The anime has done everything STUDIO DEEN hasn't done in so many years, good animation focusing on character expressions, body interaction, camera angles. What to say about the amazing voice acting giving the storytelling a more vivid imagery.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju has all the potential to be the show of the season, it has compiled all elements to make a beautiful, stunning anime in just ond episode and make the 50 minutes unforgettable and rich in content.

Also, I don't know if I'm missing some context here, but Konatsu; is she as individual not allowed to perform Rakugo, or is it just that having female performers "just wasn't done" back then? Because I could've sworn we saw female performers backstage. |
I'm sure one of the backstage "performers" turned out to be the friend of konatsu's parents. I'm glad i watched this, i had no idea this evn existed coming in and it was only until i was near the halfway mark did i realize that this was 40+ mins long. The first episode was good, but there were just some things that could have been better. Some of the events just felt too forced in Rakugo the introduction of the Boss character is the one that comes to mind. The guy literally ust walks in from what feels like no where. How did e even find Yotaro? Was there any clue to him sending out any scouts or anything that i might have missed. Then he just walks into their backyard like it's nothing and no one seems to think much of it. Might just be a cultural thing.
He exits the show similarly too, his whole involvement just felt forced. Then there's Konatsu. I'm not too liking her character at all, she feels more 1 dimensional than the rest, like one of those angry anime girls with a passion they'd do anything to purse, with a soft side. I have other minor quibbles with the show too but the unique setting and the Rakugo thing that i didn't even know existed was very fascinating. I didn't expect to even like the stories especially when Yotaro started but i got so caught up in it. - 4/5
Erased was good don't really have much to add except that i like the butterfly popping up. - 4/5
From some of the comments can see that divine gate wast too well received ' . I thought the show was pretty cute and will definitely check out the next episode.

I agree with Theron on Rakugo, while I definitely wasn't bored I was more impress by the results than entertained. I don't like theatre and such (or rather I find them strictly inferior to TV shows/movie, there relic of a time long past) so I wasn't quite sure if I'd like the sketch, but ultimately they used the fact that it's anime rather than a real life show to there advantage. The camera cut where done very well, so well that I actually liked the sketch with no "effect" more than the last one with the few effect here and there. Everything else was also very nicely done, character are interesting and the tension between them, while not spectacular, is a great way to start.

I recognized him a few lines in, but still felt the need to check to be sure. Truly amazing work from him, and really everyone in the cast. I loved all the details of Yotaro's first performance, right down to the shots of his feet. It's hard to imagine anything topping this and Erased this season.
Rokugo reminds me a little of Spalding Gray's monologues or other one-man shows like Patrick Stuart doing all the roles of A Christmas Carol (I don't believe he confined himself to one spot on stage though). Looking forward to learning more about this artform.
Divine Gate - heh this is right up my alley, drenched in angst, moood, bad poetry and three-fisted symbolism. I agree with all the reviewers about how terrible it is in every way, but I'll watch it anyway because I love this shit. It'll probably be this season's giddy pleasure for me.
Sekkou Boys - uhm ... uh ... well ... WTF did I just watch??
That Pandora thing. Didn't make it past opening the box.

Man, winter really is just not looking that good. Nothing was really grabbing my attention, but I think I've found a couple shows to stick with, but my brief thoughts so far.
Myriad Colors Phantom World: It wasn't the worst, but it certainly wasn't that good either. Never been into these battle harem adaptions and this really looks like it's going there. Couple jokes were funny, but eh.
Prince of Stride: Should be something up my alley because sports, but I'm just not feeling it. I like the parkour/running aspect, but I assume that they'll put romance elements into it because it's an otome. The jokes were... Okay? I guess. I dunno. I got that 30 free day trial at FUNi for this, but not thinking it's worth it. Their subs were pretty 'meh' for this as well so that was distracting..
ERASED: Now this was a surprise! I'm really digging the aesthetic and feel to this work. Plus the mystery has me very curious! I didn't expect to like this that much to be honest, but if it keeps up may be my AOTS.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: I loved this so much I didn't even notice it was 45 minutes long! It just went by that fast! I love the cultural aspect and the characters are charming too. Studio DEEN did decent with the animation too. I'm gunna see where it goes, but this looks good.
It's probably best not to get into too much anime this season. School calls.

As a fan of Excel Saga and the manga i really liked Pandora, the adaption is very good and close.
Boku Dake ga Inai Machi is also another interesting show but they compress too much, on the other hand they will adapt the whole story so is comprensible.
Galko-san is another very fun adaption from the manga and keep the gortesque dialogues and jokes.
Overall is a good start for this 2016 season, much better compared to the previous one.
Same hate for fanservice shows from some ann reviewers, but they are the same so no surprised here since they never read the manga and know nothing (expecially Pandora).

Looks like Erased is going to be the Anime Everyone's Talking About this season. It's definitely a lot better than I expected, but I feel like my incalculable oversaturation with the urban crime mystery-thriller genre is going to weaken it for me. Saw where this episode was going as soon as the weird guy showed up at the hospital... it's not so much the predictability that's the issue, but more the fact that I've seen this sort of twist so many times (because my family diligently watches ALL the crime dramas) that it has no emotional effect on me at all anymore.

Watched every show so far but Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was definitely the best show so far. Can't describe how much I enjoyed watching the first episode.

I think your sample size is a little small there. I'm a girl and I thought Active Raid was great. (It's fun to occasionally have a show that doesn't seem interested in taking itself the least bit seriously - or at least that was my take on it.)

Just a girl popping in to say I liked Active Raid too.
Anyway, on Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, I felt I missed out a bit on my enjoyment of the show. I blame this completely on my lack of understanding of Showa-period Japanese. Storytelling jargon too, mind you. I wast torn between watching the expressions and gestures the characters made, and paying attention to the subs to actually follow the story. This wasn't really a problem during Yotaro's long sketch, but it was during Master's. I find myself watching more the visuals than actually following Master's story. Maybe what Yotaro did there was too infectious?
So, I feel I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I was Japanese (that's an obvious point to make about any anime, but in a literary technical anime like this, the gap just hits that much harder than high school anime jargon). Well then, excuse me while I go study up some more kanji. Being lost like this just won't do!
