Well, I was "Yahoo! Answers", and in the Comics and Animation section there are countless questions that ask: "Where can i watch free [insert anime here] episodes?".(Or they'll say something similar to that...only they'll add: "without downloading") Geez...how lazy can you get? x(
Do the websites that show the Anime (for free) have some sort of free trial thing? And isn't that illegal? o___o;;(watching movies, etc without paying for them?) And does the website only survive via "donations"? =\ ...I dont know...but it annoys me how people just want stuff for free. >___<;; ~What do you think? ^^;; |

I think those websites run off donations, as well as out of the owner's pockets. And yeah, they're illegal.
I was just reading some Naruto scanlations in which a note was added by the translator, asking for money to put down on a house payment! |

Sometimes companies do stream legal versions of the first episode of a series for publicity. However I doubt thats the case with any of the sites youre talking about.
Its possible these sites also make money off advertising as well. Ofcourse youre not gonna see any major products putting ads there. However I expect theres enough people willing to pay something for advertising that they can find something.
Trust me, you don't want to open up that can of worms. I hope that people wont get started on it since it will mean this topic getting locked. This issue has been debated so many times, its completely redundant. Its a hot topic too so discussions on it tend to go nowhere. |

I believe it's essential for everyone to have some kind of customer service related job at least once where one learns an important fundimental life lesson:
The majority of people are morons lacking in common curtesy for others and sense of self preservation. (Multiply this factor by 10 if the Internet is involved) Once you come to accept this ultimate truth you are no longer surprised when dumb people do stupid things, and by always expecting the worst can be pleasantly surprised when you meet a decent one. |

Coindicentally I looked through Yahoo Answers the other day and was dismayed that nearly all the anime questions were about where to watch or download anime for free.. I'm reminded of the internet shopping part of the Red vs Blue "Real Life Vs Internet" video.
I have seen an anime download site (ironically located via an advert served via the contentlink thing on these forums) that actually charged a subscription and looked reasonably legit until you look at the list of example titles which include unlicensed or unreleased titles. |

Yeah, I always see that and it's really pretty annoying because it's always like that..I also don't understand why they do it; I mean, if you buy a DVD of anime it feels better than watching via Internet [it's the same as borrowing books].. but I guess they just want to watch the particular anime, not like it or anything..

I find owning is is much more satisfying than downloading as well, myself, though I do both. Usually buy about 90% of what I watch later though, and my DVD collection is pretty sizeable.

I had never heard of these sites before, until I recently saw the little brothers of my girlfriend watching Naruto on one. I was shocked... There are actually services for people who are even too lazy to download something.
Anyway not that it affects my own habit of buying/downlaoding, but this is just another example that the internet is growing out of hand and people are more lazy and dumb than ever... |

This is just a nitpick, but if you are watching it on your computer, whether you realize it or not, you have in fact downloaded it. As far as answers. It is annoying, if for no other reason than the nonchalantness. |

I just feel like it's a major slap in the face to see how common this has become, that even Yahoo Answers caters to these people. But that's the way it's been for a very long time now. I've been waiting for the industry to finally have a bad enough year that it eventually begins to crater. Guess we're not quite there yet, though Geneon's cut backs might be a sign of something on the horizon. Perhaps. In the mean time I'm just glad my job has nothing to do with the anime market.

Yes, I know of a website which streams anime for free and it is fully legitimate, but the 3 titles currently streamed are available to residents in Canada only. They can be found in muchmusic.com axs website and the titles Basilisk, Trinity Blood and Samurai 7 are streamed for free by Razer, a private Canadian tv channel. The streamed videos are not downloadable for legal resons, you can only view them online. The quality is not good and depending on your internet connection, the sclips may take a long time to load. All the 3 titles are streamed in full.
Hence, the question in Yahoo is fully legitimate. Streaming movies will not allow viewers to download thus protecting copyrights. Of course, some companies must have paid for the licence to stream them in this manner. After watching the streamed anime titles, I bought the full collection for two of the titles. If you are outside Canada, you may not be able to view the clips. |

Fully legitimate? You really think they only wanted a handful of low-quality region-specific examples? It sounded to me like they were going to Yahoo Answers to avoid the pain of having to wait for their torrents to finish, but maybe I'm the one who's being naive here and most fans suddenly decided to give up all the free content and simply go without. I guess that's possible. BTW, as DragonXTC already mentioned there is really very little difference between downloading and streaming. One is typically synchronous and the other is often asynchronous. Other than that it's pretty much the same thing. If you can watch it then you can usually save it with just a little bit of effort. |

Streaming is very different from downloads. Although I've never downloaded any movies, the very fact that it plays from the desktop assures that it will be smooth or at least, the frames won't freeze like in a streamed video. Examples of streamed video would be sites like CNN, BBC etc. Are you trying to tell me that streamed video is the same as downloads????? The technology is completely different. You do need licence to stream a video online. Try downloading one of CNN'S videos! If you are in Canada, try going to this site http://www.muchmusic.com/axs/ look for Razer's section (if you can find it) and try downloading the streamed videos! You won't be able to do it without a hell lot of hacking. If you are not in Canada, don't even try, your IP address will be blocked. |
