I have three young girls, they've liked all the Studio Ghibli productions, and are into Avatar..
What I'm looking for is tame stories that, especially if they're girl positive. They positively cracked up at a bottle fairies episode, so it doesn't have to be the best... but I'd like to be able to watch it with them without being bored too! Any suggestions appreciated, thanks! |

I'm sure Sailor Moon would be a good idea. There is also Full Moon wo Sagashite, Cardcaptor Sakura and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. I haven't seen any of these since besides the Studio Ghibli films I don't really watch anything else that is for kids, but they are all rated Older Children.

Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy is always a good choice in my opinion. It's fun, cute, and rather touching.

Well cardcaptors would have to be it instead of cardcaptor sakura unless they love reading and are very quick with it. And in that case, I think we'd all recommend something else. How old are they? Azumanga Daioh has an excellent dub from what I've heard(only watched it subtitled) and is pretty harmless other than some jokes about breast size from what I remember.

Depends on exactly how tame you mean. Fruits Basket has some language in it. Kyo has a bit of a mouth on him, but they never use any harsh language. Besides that I think it's an excellent family series. I even let a mother I use to work with borrow it and she watched it all with her sons and daughter. They loved it.

Kaleido Star? Its about a young girl who goes to join a sort of circus performance group. Its basically just about her fitting in and learning the ropes and stuff. Not an action packed series, but its pretty entertaining and quite positive.

When you say young, you mean around 8,10, still kids, right?
I reccomend the Miyazaki Movies. Many people have liked them, even though they're not "young" anymore. If you're really looking for an anime series, fruits basket seems to be popular with girls. Even though the characters sometimes curse. But if you're the parent who's concerned about what your kids watch, Kodocha would seem to do fairly well. |

One blogger described Kamichu as Ghibli-esque. I certainly enjoyed it - it's a fairly gentle story about a school girl who becomes, and then has to cope with being, a Shinto deity (for unexplained reasons) and her friends. It's also very well animated, well plotted and enjoyable in a soothing way.
The only reservations I can imagine would be about a little Shinto, or possibly about the historico-political ramifications of one episode which involves the Battleship Yamato (though not in any military capacity). Other than that, I must admit to my shame that not much of what I watch would suit pre-teens. |

Also this one. And as an afterthought of my recommendation of Galaxy Angel in that thread, I do not recommend the sequel Galaxy Angel Rune to children. Mostly because of the frequent fanservice (which is absent in the original 4 series), but also because I don't really think it's as good as the previous series either.

Ah forum redundancy, insuring that all topics are covered at least five or six times. Or more.
As long as the OP gets a few good ideas, it's not a bad thing. Just posting a link to another thread with a curt "read this thread" might strike some as unfriendly anyway. |

My daughter (age 6) really liked Azumanga Daioh, Princess Tutu, and Final Fantasy Unlimited, which I thought was lousy and wouldn't have picked up except she liked it. She liked most of the Ghibli movies- oddly enough, she didn't like The Cat Returns, but she liked the big (scary?) bugs in Nausicaa. I've watched a couple of episodes of Mushishi with her in the room, but she wasn't really all that into it. My older (age 12) son and I watched Crest/Banner of the Stars with her present, without any issues, but again, she wasn't really into it. I think if she was older (maybe 10-12ish), she'd probably like 12 Kingdoms, but it's a little intense for a six year old, I think. At least my six year old, anyway. And me and the boy watched parts of Fullmetal Alchemist with her around, but I don't think I'd recommend all of that for anybody less than maybe 10, and there are a lot of parts that could be scary or just too much for the right (wrong?) kid, so I'd say watch that one beforehand. School rumble looks like it could be ok for older kids, although I've only seen the first five episodes.

Not at all, I'm sufficiently forum experienced to take it for what it's worth. I did search through a few posts, but apparently my search-fu was sufficiently off that I didn't find the threads linked. I'm really quite pleasantly surprised at the amount of helpful suggestions and will have my hands full going through this thread and the other two referenced. Thanks all! I second this series, it was a little too tame for me and I bought it since it was part of a Geneon sale (see what they did to themselves!!). So I just gave the entire collection to her for a birthday present and she's watched up to the fourth DVD. And she's 15. She loves watching it too. |

Out of curiosity how did your girls get into anime? Was it something you or another family member showed them or did they just stumble upon it somehow? Sorry if I seem overly curious.
