Since the second episode I have referred to it as The Case Files of the Woke Richard.

Which is not a pejorative and shouldn’t be. I’ve loved the term since it’s modern usage was coined in Erykah Badu’s “Master Teacher”- I stay woke.
(apparently there are older 20th century African-American usages but Badu brought it into the wider realm.)

So a character that really values inclusiveness and understanding is such a breath of fresh air.

Man I'm totally sold on this show now. Hope I can find some time to catch up on it with all the other great shows this season.

This show is so good and one that I actually watch the day it airs as opposed to waiting for the weekend to marathon everything I’ve been into. The stories are great and Sakurai and Yuuma are doing a fantastic job with Richard and Seigi.

I'm glad I picked this up a couple of weeks ago. It reminds me of Bartender, another iyashikei series. I still have In/Spectre as my "hidden gem" though.

The primary voice cast for this series is extraordinary. Along with Sakurai as Richard, we have Uchida Yuuma as Seigi and Kanazawa Hana as Shouko.

Amen. Smile He's why I picked this up in the first place, and he hasn't disappointed. He seems to have become the go-to for roles that require a lot of technical foreign words and names (see this season's A Destructive God Sits Next to Me - or maybe don't. :/). But he's really perfect for this role. And "like Mushi-Shi with more bling" is an excellent summary of the series.

I kinda wish they'd named the character something other than Richard though. Jeweler Richard is too reminiscent of Richard Jewell, the falsely accused security guard during the '96 Atlanta Olympics.

On the other hand, as I said in the "What are you watching?" thread, Seigi is a walking cringe factory. Laughing His heart's always in the right place, but he's so clueless about everything, and in his eagerness to stick his nose into everything he's like a clumsy puppy. It's very entertaining watching the sedate and dignified Richard trying to rein him in and house train him. I think my favorite example was the wonderful text he sent to Seigi after he'd embarrassed him by raving about how beautiful Richard was, and nothing he said could seem to shut him up.

I thought the kid was pretty interesting, though I agree that the cause of the conflict was stupid as hell. But I did like how he put Seigi in his place just as effectively as Richard does when he suggested the kid's father might be a crappy dad, and the kid was not having it. And I like that Seigi does learn from getting dunked on when he deserves it.

This is just a wonderful series, and I'm still disappointed it didn't get a weekly review. I hope more people will pick it up after this TWIA.

You and me, both. I voted for it, even though I knew it was a long-shot. It’s my little oasis of tea and peace each week. And yeah, even though the kid episode annoyed me (dude, just tell your son the cat’s gonna visit friends for a while—it’s not that hard!), I’m still a sucker for a sweet cat story.

Thanks, TWIA , for giving the show your spotlight this week. It really deserves it.

this is the only anime I'm actually excited about this season

idk, it might be that it addresses more realistic/relatable challenges through characters who are around my age that make each viewing so dang pleasant? sometimes there's just as much drama in navigating how to appropriately approach someone who is "different" than you as there is watching magical girls or shounen boys get strongaaaah. (and honestly I've reached a point where I kinda prefer social drama over the fantastical, yo)

but anyway this show kinda reminds me of a chill sunday morning and I've been so excited about the series for the past three weeks and I'm very happy for whatever's to come. and also, richard is hot. so,,,

I'll add that people who are enjoying this should definitely check out Bartender that yuna49 mentioned. They both have a very mellow, soothing ambiance along with the personal dramas, while quietly educating about obscure subjects.

Jeweler Richard is quietly becoming one of my anticipated episodes throughout the week. It's definitely not a show for everyone, but for those that would enjoy it will really like it.

Seigi *really* need to watch Craig Ferguson's "Three Questions" routine:

1) Does this need to be said?
2) Does this need to be said by me?
3) Does this need to be said by me now?

Any answer which is NOT an unequivocal "yes" means "SHUT THE [CENSORED] UP".

The entire Bartender series is freely available on YouTube (using the Lunar fansub).

Like Jeweler Richard, Bartender has educational material, in this case on the history of alcoholic beverages.

As much as I love Bartender too, by “freely available” do you mean illegally uploaded? Or has this series been licensed?

Someone uploaded the Lunar fansub back in 2012. The rights-holders (probably Fuji and Pony Canyon) could have filed a "take-down" notice with Google demanding that the property be removed from YouTube. They have not done so in over seven years which tells me they don't care about enforcing their rights on this show.

So, as a purely legal matter, the copy of Bartender at YouTube is infringing, but as a practical matter, the rights-holders have given up caring about this show.

Other anime properties appear in whole or in part on YouTube, and production committees or their members could choose to enforce their rights or not. It once was the case that fansubs of Mononoke were uploaded to YouTube. Toei didn't seem to mind, but Sony enforced its rights on the OP and ED (the gorgeous ballad Natsu no Hana by JUJU). So some people uploaded copies of Mononoke to YouTube with the songs cut out. Now it appears that Sony doesn't care about them either since all the episodes were uploaded with those songs intact over two years ago.

I finally made a discussion thread for this, so please don't leave me all alone there! I really want to hear what people thought of episode 6.
