The game sold lots of copies in Japan at the time of its release and was more or less successful compare to the western side of the world.

Probably does in Japan |
Can't speak for Japan but it sold big time in the west in it's first few months out and probably will sell more with the Switch version coming later this month.

I'm sure the thinking is that it's been long enough since the manga and anime covered that to be ok. There are always going to be new people coming into a series, but something like this game is generally meant for existing fans. It's about as much of a spoiler as having Kaguya from Naruto as a character, even though she shows up at the end of the story.
