Porcupine, for someone who seems to so utterly dislike the show, you sure did seem to watch it pretty fast. I don't know about you, but the only time I ever watch a series that quickly is when I'm completely hooked.
I've only seen the first 5 episodes (been waiting patiently for MONTHS for the R1), but I've yet to hear a single bad thing about it (episode 4 aside) from anyone except Porcupine. From what I saw, it seems incredible, and I'm very much anticipating the damn DVD!!!

Five episodes, eh? And you think that's cool?

*Begins laughing maniacally*

You have no f***ing idea, bahamut. This series take the definition of epic and completely turns it on its' head. Years from now, TTGL is going to be the Gainax series that everyone remembers and everyone has seen a thousand times over, while NGE gathers dust in some forgotten corner of anime history.

I am eagerly awaiting Gainax's next production. Let's all hope it too is forged from pure, untainted, Epic Win.

bahamut, yup what you said is true. I also tend to watch things faster if I like it more (and have the ability to) and slower if I don't. But I tend to watch things fast in general. It took me 1 week to watch all of Gurren-Lagann, so I was struggling. An average series I think I would have finished in only 2 days (6 hours per day, that's about right) or maybe 3 days. If it's a weekend I would watch it all in 1 day if I like the show a lot.

That doesn't mean I watch sloppily and unobservantly though. I still pay a lot of attention and when I start to get tired I do something else. Also I almost always rewatch a show at a leisurely pace later on to make sure I catch everything. (In one of my earlier posts I even noted that I rewatched Gurren-Lagann Episode 1 quite early on). But in this case I doubt I will rewatch Gurren-Lagann. Unless maybe I can convince a friend to buy the DVD or Blu-Rays when it comes out then I will watch again in better video quality and that might help me have a better opinion of this series.

Ha ha. Dear god, I hope your joking. The last four episodes compromised 40% of the entire show's budget. Think of the style what you want, but the end of the series was anything but poorly animated.

No no, we don't argue, we just slow down and stare at the car wreck before moving on.

I hope that YOU are the one who is joking. Think about the utter stupidity of what you just said. 40% of the entire show's budget on just 4 out of 27 episodes? Show me where you got that figure.

I appreciate that you allow me to think of the style as I want (I think the drawing style of Yoko and Nia are excellent by the way, it's the overall style that is Samurai Jack/Dead Leaves trash though). But animation quality, that is something that can theoretically be somewhat unobjectively determined simply by counting distinct picture frames. If you count up the number of frames for Gurren-Lagann episodes 25 and 26 you will get a number that is much lower than the average episode for Gurren-Lagann. That is fact, it's not opinion.

Note that I did not say anything about Episode 27 having bad drawings or cheap animation, though, just to be clear. I only said it was boring and garbage though. Also I didn't say anything about Episode 24 at all.

But regardless, you should re-examine the utter stupidity of your claim that Episodes 24-27 took up 40% of the entire show's budget. If anything, because Episodes 25-26 were so cheap, they should have taken up less than expected-average 15% of the total show's budget (4 episodes out of 26 total, not counting one filler episode).

I meant the last five. My mistake.

In mid July 2007 a 2ch member known for giving accurate spoilers submitted camera photos of the script for Gurren-Lagann episode twenty four months in advance, along with some facts about the series. One of these leaks stated that Gainax spent 40% of the Gurren-Lagann budget on the final five episodes, along with the fact episode 15 had nearly twice the frames that a typical anime finale has.

Of course, I don't have the script photos, so I can't prove it. You're inclined to believe whatever you wish, but it doesn't take an expert to see the jump in budget in episode 24+

So some forum poster on 2chan is your reliable source? Hah, I can only scoff at that.

I think that anyone who is not blind can see a massive drop in quality for Episodes 25 and 26. (Again though, I'm not speaking about Episodes 24 and 27). That's a fact, it's not even subject to opinion.

I do completely believe what you said about Episode 15. In an earlier post I had mentioned that Episode 15 and 17 had impressed me. Although your statement about Episode 15 wasn't that unusual, because a typical anime isn't very outstanding at all, and a typical anime's finale is not that much better than its average episode (usually the first episode is the most expensive episode). In any case, Gurren-Lagann Episode 15 certainly had superb animation quality. Also, I cannot remember the exact episode numbers but I think Gurren-Lagann Episodes 21-23 or so also had a terrific animation quality (the semi-final battles if you will, as opposed to the disappointingly lame final battles in Episodes 25-27).

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Which series were you watching again? I detected nary a hint of anything even approaching lameness in the whole series (episode 4 aside), much less the final battle.

Guess there's just no pleasing some people.

24 and 27 are certainly the high point of the series, but it's pretty ridiculous for you to say 25 and 26 were sub-par. 26 was amazing, but the style for the second half was certainly off-putting in the line of episode 9.

25 was at least on par with 2, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19 in terms of visuals.

Jesus, dude. Do you read what you type? Your posts are absolutly dripping with elitism.

this is more along the lines of a train wreck plowing through a trailer pack during a twister...while hauling toxic waste

@Porcupine
if you didn't like the final episodes of TTGL what do you like?

I'VE NEVER MET ANYONE WHO WATCHED TTGL AND DIDN'T AT LEAST ENJOY IT

People, this is Porcupine you're talking to, he hates everything so long as he believes someone else likes it. He also likes the spout lies about things and pass them off as 'obvious facts'. My question is, what's next Porcupine? Are you going to go watch Mushi-shi and complain that the characters have crappy character designs and that the background animation doesn't look "anime-ish" enough for you?

Ask and you shall receive my dear Selenta. You were off the mark a bit it seems. Wink

people, people as Selenta has said, this is Porcupine we're talking about, his username suits him. Just relax a little and you might come to love him because his posts are so ridiculous and entertaining Wink that's what I do. As Abe once said, you can't change horses in the middle of a stream. That goes for personality as well. So don't get yourself in a huff, just laugh.

You have a week of blessed relief. Go back to the meat of the discussion, and leave the discussion of Porcupine's antics for the next time you see him.
