They've been trying to branch out for a long time, it just never works

Was surprised at how good this looks. Game Freak when not limited by Nintendo seems quite impressive.

Yeah, just in the last decade the Pocket Card Jockey sequel, Little Town Hero, two Giga Wrecker titles, and Tembo were all multiplatform releases. They just haven't done anything outside of Pokemon to grab anyone's attention. The last game they did that got any attention was Harmoknight and that was in 2012.
I was genuinely excited when I saw their logo on this, maybe this will finally be the hit they've been looking for.

I know I saw a fair amount of comments from people who were surprised that Game Freak was doing something that wasn't Pokemon. Given their output, I can understand why people wouldn't realize that Pokemon Company and/or Nintendo don't own Game Freak. Game Freak has also made comments that hinted at the constant churn of Pokemon games is a problem when it comes to the quality.
I'm not entirely surprised to see something ambitious looking from them. Those Pokemon contracts are bound to be lucrative enough to have a side project going, and I think if they want to have a chance of being not just the Pokemon devs, they have to make a splash.

I am surprised because one of the biggest excuses people give for the recent Pokemon games' lackluster quality/performance is that GF supposedly have a small team there (again, this is a big "supposedly", I just see it bandied about on the internet and have no idea how accurate it is), so to see they have enough folks to branch off and do this whole other thing was a real "wait, what?" moment for me personally.

I mean yes GameFreak is still a small company compared to all the major AAA companies people unrealistically want Pokémon to be turned into and I think people are also discounting the role TPC in the issues with the Pokémon games.

Ah, Harmoknight. Such a cute little game.
Having been a fan of that back in the day, I'm not surprised to see Game Freak try different things, since I already knew they did more than just Pokemon. The style of game is a little surprising though since I was more used to cute and quirky games and never expected a Souls/Monster Hunterish type game.
Looks like fun (I don't have an XBOX tho). I like the grinding on plants mechanic.

Well, you're in luck as it's also coming to PS5 and PC via Steam. I wouldn't be surprised if a Nintendo release is announced in the future given their relationship with the company.

Oh cool, I hadn't looked closely since I just saw XBOX and figured it was an exclusive or something. Would be nice to play on Switch but will probably be a Switch 2 game if it does get a Nintendo console release.

Very fair. (I don't know why they're so dead set on that 3 year turnaround time between games)

Pokemon is a corporate machine that must maintain constant output to feed the franchise, sadly. It worked better in the era of 2D games but has since shown the cracks of this method as the series moved into 3D
The stark difference between this and Scarlet and Violet is truly astounding. There's probably many factors in play: Switch hardware, TPC mandates and design decisions, etc. But it's amazing.
Coincidentally there was another monster game in the showcased called Aniimo that looked really neat and modern as well.

Did anyone else see the shot of Emma's hair turning into vines and get flashes of the film Annihilation? I wonder if anyone at Game Freak has watched that movie...

See, I get the thing about it being a machine that needs constant output, but they have an anime, a card game, and a still incredibly popular mobile game that now directly links to the mainline games! It's not like an extra year or two between mainline games is gonna send Pikachu into obscurity.
Heck, if they just need a constant stream of Pokemon to keep people engaged, just pull a Meltan/Melmetal and release one or two new ones on GO occasionally!

I agree, I hope that them not even announcing the new one yet means we have a little while to make sure the next mainline game isn't undercooked, and I say that as someone who is a fan of most of the recent games and just wish they ran better.
I think a bigger issue than turnaround date and team size though is the constantly ballooning number of Pokemon. Scarlet and Violet had 600 pokemon with Pokedex entries (400 main game, 200 DLC) and another 133 pokemon that can be transferred from recent games). I know some of those have some assets already made, but just writing pokedex entries, adding animation for features like moving around the world, and other logistical work like that likely adds up to a large portion of the work load. I think older pokemon games were more suited to upgrading sprites and moves in a more straightforward way and that getting things like the ability to move around with all of those pokemon following you are a lot more work than we realize.
Not that it's an excuse for a sub par product, they should space them further out if that's the case. I can see how in the DS era the games were manageable with a smaller team and timeline but as time went on they kept to the same release schedule and the project creep got away from them. As long as they are going to start doing stuff that swings for the fences and completely changes up things like movement and how to encounter pokemon while they continue including 733 pokemon they should definitely spend more time in testing.
Of course with it being about 2.5 years since Scarlet and Violet and no mainline game announced yet, maybe they have taken that to heart will spread out releases more to make sure the next one is highly polished and a showstopper.
To refer to your original point, I am not too surprised they can do this because the logistics of dealing with Pokemon's massive size is probably the better part of their work so if they make something without all that baggage [ETA: it makes sense it could be much polished.]
@FinalVentCard
It's a pretty great movie so I wouldn't be surprised!
