Please don't follow the "Love Never Dies" route...

After the first annoucement of the Anne Shirley anime I was wondering if there was going to be another anime based on another work of Western literature, I do not know about The Phanto of the Opera, but I know it was originally a book from the early 20th century, but I'm sure people are more familiar witht the play. I also don't know a lot about musical theater, or theater in general, so I don't know how are they going to adapt it.
Now, while it Studio Orange is involved I assume this is going to be a CGI anime, and maybe it's going to be marketed towads Western audiences, though I do believe some famous Western musicals have Japanese productions, I've seen some references to musicals like West Side Story in manga/anime like Cyborg 009 and Doraemon, and I think Les Misérables (both the book and the musical) is famous in Japan as well, I mean it even got adapted into a World Masterpiece Theater series. |

Well, I'm only familiar with the OG black and white silent film of the same name, so I'm SoL.
If it's Andrew Lloyd Webber attached...we'll see. |

I love how Leviathan turned out so Phantom is in good hands with Qubic Pictures, I believe.

OK, so this is something I didn't expect to see. An anime adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version. OK that's fair, we do have a graphic novel adaptation of the musical (not the novel the musical was based on, and no, it's not a OEL manga). I would like to see a OEL manga adaptation of it (the original novel, not the musical) assuming if Manga Classics was given this duty to do it and they did adapt Les Miserable into OEL manga format. Also, Manga Classics just recently adapted Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet into OEL format. Maybe just maybe I'm hoping to see Phantom of the Opera could get a OEL adaptation from them assuming they're given a green light to do it.

I was just telling my sister a few days ago that it's been a while since we've had a new Phantom adaptation, OMG. I hope this happens, I've been on a Phantom kick the last few weeks and this is the last sort of thing I expected.

Right? With copyright laws so very different, I’m curious how they’re planning to handle the music. All original music would be the safest route, but Phantom’s music is pretty iconic, and it’d be a shame not to have some kind of nod to it where possible. Given that this is Andrew Lloyd Webber's company that was started to manage his works rebranding and partnering with Qubic Pictures to potentially adapt the musical rather than Qubic Pictures wanting to Adapt the musical and trying to get the rights, I'm fairly confident that they'll be able to use the music directly from the musical itself. |

Like db999 said above, Andrew Lloyd Webber's company is co-producing this anime film, so that means the music and the songs from the musical would make an appearance in the film. In other word, Webber has given the anime the green-light to allow the songs and music to appear in the anime film. |

Nice! Now I’m wondering how they’ll do casting for the songs. I know there are different favorites for “best” Phantom and stuff throughout the years on the Broadway side, and given how long the musical’s been running, I’m sure the same must be true for the Japanese version, but that’s way outta’ my wheelhouse. |

If it's a 3 or 4 part max OVA i'll give it a shot.
I can't see this working as a full length series though. The runtime for the musical is only 2 1/2 hrs. so it really would only convert to like 6-8 episodes total if it was a series and then it would run into real pacing issues. |

When i was younger i always wanted to see an anime version of the PHantom of the Opera and i was wondering why it never got, later i discovered that they can't do anything without paying for the rights until it becomes public domain which it reached back in 2022.
I figured that right after we would get something and here we are. the question is weather it will be good or not. We shall see. It has a lot of potential if done right. |
