The parallels to Inuyasha almost feel intentionally misleading. If you just read a series synopsis for Mao it sounds like a straight ripoff of it, but once you get into it it becomes apparent that the storytelling is completely different and it's something Rumiko Takahashi has never done before. It's not an action/adventure series, it's horror mystery with some fighting. Rumiko said in interviews that she read a lot of mystery novels including the entire body of work of Agatha Christie while preparing for Mao and you can really tell. The way the scope of the mystery of what happened on the final days of the Goko clan keeps expanding with more and more questions while feeding the reader just the right amount of answers at regular intervals to make them feel like it is going somewhere and it's not just some empty mystery box is remarkable. At the point we're at in the story, the resolution of the various main characters could range from happy to tragic in many cases and I personally hope Rumiko doesn't pull any punches.
