His face reminded me of Anya's nemesis Damien in Spy Family when he's in bully mode. Or Anya herself when she's being devious. I'm sure we'll see more of him - the question is whether he'll be a constant thorn in the side or turn out to be his most loyal knight. Could go either way.
I was as confused as Arthur about how blasé everyone was about the duel, and even what sort of duel it was supposed to be. Did Blondie not expect a fist fight? Was he anticipating magic? The whole scene was weird.

Well, with episode 7 the now moody teenage elf has become something like a frenemy I guess. Thus the answer seems to be neither for now. Otherwise the episode was a solid finish to the elf arc. Arthur is no longer at risk of exploding and with his new skills and magic plus a tiny dragon seems ready for the next challenge. First up is the family reunion though.

The hatching of the dragon threw me, since I didn't remember him having an egg to hatch, and that's a plot point in Atelier. I kinda have a vague memory of Sylvia giving him something before she passed on, that he was supposed to keep secret, but can't recall it clearly. Might have to go back and rewatch that. But the scene played out like he was always keeping the egg handy and was only surprised that it was now hatching, not that its appearance at all was a surprise.
eta: ok, upon review, she gave him the egg and a feather to wrap it in. I remembered the feather, but somehow not the egg. And now I think the other voice talking to Sylvia was our little dragon baby. (hmm, since Sylvie is black and Sylvia was white, does that imply the black dragon Sylvia blasted was the baby daddy?) And possibly Sylvie was formerly someone important to Arthur when he was King Grey and perhaps arranged for his reincarnation and her own as the dragon kitty?
Sure took that door a long time to fully open. I imagined pixies in the gearworks, frantically trying to get the mechanism unjammed while Arty and Tess said their goodbyes.
So...his family lives with this world's Batman? oO

Episode 8 offered a happy reunion with the family (plus meeting his little sister). Given the father's nature a sparring session quickly became a thing but that is just how they are. The introduction of the other family is likely to set future events in motion, especially with the daughter wanting to learn magic.

Did they say he was only 8? He looks at least 10 or 11 to me. I was also amazed by how long it took everyone to ask about Sylvie. If it were me, it would've gone something like, "Oh, so glad to see you're safe and well and back home! And what the hell is that on your shoulder?" Instead it was, "Welcome home, glad you're back, this is your sister, let's eat, what level are you at now, we should have a spar, say, what's the deal with your pet?"
And still the general dialog continues to be absurdly disjointed, repetitive and/or nonsensical.
Arthur: So, since you're talking about me, I have something to say about this. See ya, I'm going to wander the building for awhile.
Arthur: I want to talk about the proposition to send me to the Academy.
Parents: We're leaving now. Get some rest. Oh, btw, we have this to say about sending you to the Academy. Bye now.
Then there was the weird moment in the kitchen, where Lilia was the subject of the image as she is the only figure animated (bending over to look at something), so it looks like she's the one speaking while a male voice adds some commentary. And then the episode's final close up shot of her with an indecipherable expression, looking at who knows what while saying nothing. wth
Plus the excessive Dutch angles, overheads and other unconventional framing in almost every scene is making me dizzy, regardless of the lack of any actual movement. Haven't seen anything like it since Vatican Miracle Examiners.
Despite it all, I'm still enjoying the series, though it might not sound like it.

The main issue is that the source material is not that amazing writing wise and the adaptation is rushing through said material on top of that. It makes for events/conversations not really flowing all that well at times.
Episode 9 was some quality time with the family and solving the magic issue. The latter involved a bit of cruelty towards the dad but it was needed since he was pushing her a bit too much (Arthur too). Those cocky students are likely going to be a thing later on.

As of episode 10 I would like for things to be a bit more..... animated. It is hard to appreciate the story and setting when there are so many static shots that go on for way too long. Not that the story is brilliant mind you.

And so ends the first season. I struggle to call the show more than okay, it was amusing enough to not drop but unless the second season is aired in a calm season (do we still have those?) I am kind of done with it.

I think I enjoyed it much more than most others, so I'll be watching whenever it drops.
I wonder what the significance of his mask finally having two eyes is. Up until seeing that, I assumed it was some sort of one-way screen. But was he operating half blind all this time? Did he forget to punch out the black place holder in that one eye when he bought the mask?

Yeah, I really enjoyed this one. Loved the voiceover with the old man, I feel like it has a lot of potential

Season 2 1-6
Am I the only one who came back for this? Anyway, I'm enjoying it maybe more than last season (most of which I forget). The noble elf guy Lucas is a real piece of work. The running joke about Arthur/Note's elf kinda-girlfriend approach/avoiding seeing him again wasn't ever funny and has long worn out its welcome.
The current clandestine dungeon crawl has been engaging, with lots of monkey wrenches thrown at our party. Looks like Art maybe super-powered up and blew his cover? Although I guess only Elijah was still alive/conscious to see it.

I guess Elijah has his own mysteries going on. I like him. He'll be a good addition to the gang which now includes a full-grown (sometimes) Sylvie.
But man, calling Lucas a piece of work was selling him short. His assitude is apparently limitless. Tries to kill his dungeon team and when they survive anyway, lodges a complaint with the guild against them.

That was fun. Arthur got to show off in a bunch of different ways, negotiating, "inventing," fighting, investigating... Some new mysteries raised on two different fronts.
The fight at the end was very satisfying, even if the academy bullies were cartoonishly evil. Whenever some idiot says, "How dare you make a fool out of me," I keep hoping the good guy will reply, "I didn't. You were already a fool," or "You beat me to it." But they never do.
I don't know what the heck was going on in the early scenes at home. Are they trying to ship-bait Arthur and Elijah for the fujoshi? Elijah freaks out about Arthur seeing him naked, builds a pillow bundling board in the bed they share, starts a conversation about finding a girlfriend at school, to which Arthur replies that he's not interested in girls, which prompts Elijah to gaze at him with an adoring smile. Next morning we see Arthur's legs draped over Elijah's while they sleep. Guess the pillows didn't work... Later we see Arthur wondering how his elf girlfriend is doing. I have no idea what the show wants us to conclude from all these weird mixed signals. But I do like Arthur in snark mode. He's got an odd sense of humor.
Is this the face of a boy in love or not?
