Are they actually lovers now, or did they just decide to no longer be friends?
It sounds like a stupid question, but I have many years of anime that has what should be the most obvious queer relationships and then not come out and confirm it. This is the medium that never confirm Nanoha and Fate are lovers. I need some plain language otherwise I am expecting some weird next week where they are both upset thinking they are not friends anymore.

I guess we’ll hopefully find out next week, Dusky.
A neat little fact that many people might not know is that the mountain that Kanade and Chin-lan visit, Mount Takao is located in Tokyo. I also just discovered just a few minutes ago, that there’s a real life Taiwanese actress named Chang Chin-lan. I’m guessing that this is no accident.

I'm not sure they'll use plain language to define their relationship, but I think it's clear they're more than friends now. I'd be surprised if they tried to asspull a misunderstanding about "not being friends anymore" after this. I know the medium's done that and worse, but this felt like the close of the Botan and Ibuki relationship arc.
I think in the last episodes, we'll get sweet moments with them and also conclusions to Kanade & Chin-Lan and Akane & Yaeka's arcs. I'm still not sure if Akane & Yaeka are romantically inclined or just besties.

While I currently choose to view it as cementing Ibuki and Botan as a couple, it was vague enough to make me wonder. I think we can be pretty confident of Ibuki's feelings on the subject, but I'm not as certain about Botan's.
While Botan suggesting they stop being friends could mean they become more than friends, it could also be that thanks to Chin Lan, Botan realized she doesn't feel the same way about Ibuki as Ibuki feels about her and that continuing to drink together as friends would be leading Ibuki on, so she suggests they stop being friends.
I think where my uncertainty lies is that it goes from a shot of them almost kissing, to holding hands, to standing next to each other, to Ibuki crying. And while it could have been happy crying, I thought Ibuki looked and sounded sad. Botan crying when she suggests they not be friends doesn't help any, because again it could fit with either outcome.

For what it's worth, I heard the show is a lot more explicit that they kissed than in the manga. But also, I doubt that they will, for now, put a label on the relationship, but that feels less like the show trying to tiptoe around being actually gay and more like Botan as a character clearly has issues with commitment in her relationships (she's also the only one we never got a flashback for either).

Well dammit, you're both making me doubt. It felt like with the river date, Botan came to terms with her own feelings about Ibuki, and now with the cabin date they've addressed the doubts about not knowing each other's feelings.
There's still room for more exploration without retreading ground. We both like each other more than friends, now what? What are we? How do we interact around other people? What will they say? Is their relationship too reliant on booze? They've been around each other a lot sober, and Ibuki's been flirty under those circumstances, but Botan?
I'm sure they *could* fill two more episodes with yuri yearning retreading ground and I'd eat it up, but I dream big.

Okay yeah, having checked the manga up to where it is in the show, the anime is way gayer and way more explicit. In the manga Ibuki gets courage to drink with the others by imagining Botan smiling, while in the show she just straight up imagines her naked.
The show is way hornier and I appreciate that. With that in mind I don't mind it too much if the relationship status of the various people in this story are a bit vague and flexible, and they don't want to put labels on it. It do be like that sometimes when you're that age.
