How does 3 A's and 1 B+ translate into B? If all categories were B+ then the overall grade would be B+, no? So shouldn't this be an A- at worst?

I know the overall score isn't necessarily an average, but it is a little odd for it to be lower than any of the individual scores. Was there a particular aspect of the game that dragged it down but isn't captured by any of those categories? (related, I do think it's a little odd that ANN's game reviews have no "Story" category)

I don't know that it's that odd. Some things are less than the sum of their parts, which is why we have the expression.

I thought of this as well but figured it was probably the right call since not all games are story driven. While having good story/lore does enhance the experience, it isn't as consequential as the other factors.

I do not think of games in any kind of hard quantifiable metric, so there's no actual formula or math to any of this.

It is not my experience or my style to append a hard number or grade onto a game's individual characteristics, so those letter grades are more how I feel about the game and what it achieved. Like Fluwm said, I felt The Adventures of Elliot was less than the sum of its parts.

I went at length about what I feel are its virtues, though, so don't take a B grade as anything remotely resembling a dismissal.

I loved this game! It's my GOTY
i'm glad every trope i thought would happen didn't...the only downside i can think of is that every time i look at elliot i think of a red mage Razz
