This seems like a pretty standard anime romcom/drama. In fact, it shares a few undertones from last season's I Made Friends With the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class although its title doesn't make me wince every time I read it. The lead isn't a loner, at least not yet, but he's an ordinary shmuck who happens to share a secret with a popular perfect girl type who's keeping her much more mischievous and chillaxed personality on the DL. The male lead is a bit on the bland side, and the female lead is a bit livelier to balance it out.
I wasn't knocked off my feet or anything, but I thought it was a pleasant enough way to pass half an hour, and this season isn't as romance anime heavy as last season, at least not in the high school category which was like a buffalo stampede Spring 2026. I'll give it a shot. |

It is indeed pretty standard but it has enough charm to it that I will also watch more. It helps that while Haruki has the reputation of being perfect and very calm she is not that and can be quite rowdy and mischievous (plus easy to set off). The side characters also show a bit of potential. |

Japanese title: The Time the Perfect and Proper Girl at the School I Transferred to was Actually the Friend I Played with as a Kid who I Thought was a Boy. Thank the localizers for that one |

I generally think shows like this could be much more interesting if it didn't devolve into a romance. The idea that they need to hide their friendship is stupid, and you might think he might want to bring her to meet his sister sooner rather than later to make her feel at ease.
I have been tending to drop these sorts of shows at late (and there are still so many damn shows), so I think it will be likely I won't be watching anymore. Unless there is going to be some big surprise like it actually stays platonic or something. |

I think the possessive way the childhood friend reacted when the lead first helped out farmer girl pretty much indicates a romantic evolution in progress.

I don't think that we have to be worried about the romance yet. Both main characters are a bit thick, Haruki might get there if she asks herself why seeing Hayato with another girl sets her off so much (with funny results). I like the character interactions, especially between the mc's in that they both realize that some things are still the same while others have clearly changed. It has been a while since I last hear the ''I have no cellphone'' development. |

Okay maybe I am over analyzing just look for hidden meanings. But the whole go out for ice cream, is that code for something, like she had her period and needs to buy tampons. That is the vibe I got.
Also serves him right, for not just telling his sister their child hood friend is a girl. |

The premise is so unbelievable that it hadn't even occurred to me it *could* be the premise until I read the review. "My friend prefers video games to relationship gossip" is SO not a plausible explanation for not noticing they're a girl when japanese schools have such clearly gendered uniforms, PE and sports are separated by gender, there's gendered bathrooms, some health classes are by necessity separated, and a hundred other things. Like...huh? You grew up together, you're best friends with this person. Is it really the premise of the show that somehow you didn't observe acsingle thing about them in all that time? Lol anime can be very silly sometimes.

It is mentioned several times that they haven't seen each other in the last seven years. Since they are currently first year in high school, seven years ago they were in third grade. They were in an area at least as rural as Non Non Biyori, possibly more. Going by that show, the two of them were likely the whole of their grade, taught by someone's mother. No gendered uniforms, no gym and probably only one active restroom in the whole building. The premise is a bit of a stretch but not as much as you make it. |

Well people don't know Clark Kent is Superman and the only difference is glasses, so yeah it is plausible. |

Ha yeah that's also very silly, well I'd say the difference here is that one is about flying aliens with burning laser beam eyes, while the other appeared to be a story set in the real world. As readers and watchers we only expect that stories will be internally consistent. If the story is about a world where mice talk and use magic, it's not jarring to introduce a talking bird. If the story appears to be a drama set in the real world however, a flying cat or people behaving in ways that real people don't behave is jarring and feels like the world's own "rules" have failed. |

I mean, maybe. That only covers school though. In this town so small everybody knows each other, he's never once encountered another person who knows his friend is a girl? He's surely spent time with her and her family. No matter how small the town is the concept is completely impossible. |

I disagree, but if you can't suspend disbelief I can't change you. Actually it doesn't matter. I expect the plot would run the same if he knew her gender and was simply marveling over the change from complete tomboy to (unrecognizable) class beauty. Saying he didn't know is simply a hook to draw people in. |

I had the exact same thought during the conversation...like she was clenching her teeth trying to get her dumbass block of wood brother to understand that she was having her period. "I know we have ice cream...I need...to go to the store...to buy some ice cream." But later, it seemed like what she really wanted to do was visit one of those big a$$, fancy convenience stores that were open 24 hours like she'd seen on television her whole rural life. Enjoying the show so far. |
