It certainly does suck that nowadays, shoujo manga can't seem to get good animation budgets to do the original manga justice. Even the anime for From Far Away looks rather...dull from what little the trailer showed, and apparently there's been reported to be both visual (Noriko's uniform skirt is shortened to thigh length as opposed to knee length) and narrative changes. As someone who's wanted an anime for From Far Away, it's disappointing that the anime probably isn't going to do the original story justice, just like what's happening with Red River and Hana-Kimi right now.

I don't think the animation is that bad. It may not be very flashy, but it's serviceable and doesn't impede the story.
This is an interesting new (or old) take on isekai, where the protagonist travels back in time to a history she doesn't know at all. Her reaction to her situation isn't exactly compelling, but it's understandable (actually, it's probably normal; I'm just too used to characters who casually shrug off getting isekaied), so I'm willing to wait out the slow start. I do think her decision to break into the queen's palace was very dumb, knowing how powerless she is, against the queen who is known to be a sorceress, but I guess the story needed some kind of spark to start moving forward. |

I find the animation to be serviceable. More than time travel since historical records (mostly cuneiform clay tablets inadvertently fired when libraries were burned) do not indicate real world sorcery. Will the Sea Peoples show up to ruin things? |

Fat chance of a shojo getting big budget treatment. The show is fine, it feels a little dated but that's because its an old story.The animation is acceptable, it could be worse. Yona of the Dawn is better, not in budget but in story and pacing. If you like shojo definitely give Yona of the Dawn a go.

im not surprised. after sailormoon crystal and the current anime remake of cats eye, its a safe bet that all adaptations and/or remakes from mangas and/or light novels that are from the 80's and 90's may not be up to snuff. especially if the animation team are determined to fully intergrate the author's 90's art style into the anime instead of using a smilar but not accurate one ala The Legend Of Galactic Heroes Die Nue These .
considering that the manga is 28 volumes, they will definitely HAVE TOO give it a 24/26 ep season to ensure that yuri's character development gets room to breathe. if they try to cram everything in 12 eps and skip out on a lot of details, we COULD end up having another ubel blatt situation. but what you should really be concerned is this. as we shoujo followers know all too well, a lot of these shoujo mangas from the 80's and 90's were EXTREMELY EXPLICIT when it comes to sexual assault and rape! in addition, the most popular, but most infamous shoujo manga series in that era like Fushigi Yugi, Angel Sancutary, Cress Celestial Legend & especially Red River being so explicit when it came to sexual assault & rape that viz media had to put in a "PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT CONTENT" label on them when they licensed those mangas to the US! and if modern day 21st cebtury anime fans could get disturbed and queezy over apparant rape scenes in some of the arcs involving sword art online, then i can only imagine threir reaction would be when those same fans see it full on and explicit from an anime that have been adapted from a 90's shoujo manga like red river
modern day shoujo mangas, hell all adapations will obviously get the resources needed to produce a high quality series. the problem is when said shoujo manga is from the 80's and/or 90's like red river. |

It is great that we have finally gotten some shojosei with a very good budget and production values, but it doesn't negate how far behind they are overall even just within this and last season. For Journal with Witch and Tamon, that same season, we had Clear Moonlit Dusk, Champignon and Hana-kimi that each deserved marginally better, especially just to try and match how clean and pretty the art of the manga their respective manga was/is. And to be fair, Agents of the Four Seasons has a shojo manga in LaLa, but the novel was in Dengeki Bunko. Even with Nakamura-kun, we can only assume that Opera is a female-audience leaning anthology, but I haven't seen it specified as such anywhere to group it with all the shojo. Same with Scenes from Awajima and its publisher. But just speaking to anime like Red River and From Far Away, it's a shame that 90s classics that sold very well are being given such sad productions. Especially when they haven't had an anime before and fans had to wait decades, just to get... what we have. |
