Does anyone know why the Sci-Fi channel stopped airing anime? There are plenty of science fiction oriented shows and a growinging market of anime fans, so it seems(at least to me) logical that they might consider throwing on Outlaw Star or some of the better giant robot shows.

I don't, but I hope they don't get any soon because I lost the Sci-Fi channel and I won't get to see any of it. And most likely becasue they had the anime on real late or real early I think. They could have done better by putting it on at a more reasonable time.

To quote the Scifi.com FAQ:

11. Why does SCI FI no longer run anime/cartoons?
We used to air anime movies in various time periods, the most notable and consistent one being Saturday mornings. While there is tremendous support from fans for anime (we get lots of e-mails requesting its return), it never generated strong enough ratings to earn a permanent spot on the schedule. We feel that anime belongs on SCI FI and would love to bring it back if we can make it work both creatively and financially. However, it is not part of SCI FI's current programming plans.

In other words not enough people were watching it.

There is a good chance of it coming back now. With anime continuing to gain popularity and SciFi signing to do a live action Witch Hunter Robin they may start finding it lucrative again. Not to mention they'd have a better selection than just Streamline's stuff.

Given the time slots they were giving it, I'm not really surprised. I'd honestly like to know what sort of ratings they were expecting by placing most of their anime only an hour or so prior to sunrise. Short of insomniacs, most people are either sleeping or just getting ready for work at that hour. Neutral

It didn't help that Sci-fi kept changing what time they would show anime. Sometimes it was on Saturday mornings, other times it was on at three in the morning.

I read what Answerman had to say. Yeah, Sci-fi did show the same 6 movies over and over again. I think it was the original Vampire Hunter D, Gall Force, Tenchi Muyo in Love, Project A-ko, both Galaxy Express 999 movies, and Akira. And since it was Sci-fi, there were commercial breaks ever 5 minutes. Heck, it took Sci-fi at least 3 or 4 hours to show Akira.

They srean all of the above mentioned moives, plus the Iria: Zeiram OVA and Robot Hunter: Cassahn (pretty sure I spelled that wrong)

Me and a friend I was living with used to work second shift, so the scheduling was perfect for us. Many a night we came home to a few beers and anime on Sci-Fi.

Well, you missed it, it was taken off. Anyway, what it was was Syker 07 posted an image that was off someone's server, and it turned into a gigantic "YOU STOLE BY BANDWIDTH" type of thing. It was just... huge.

Really? I haven't been here in a day or two (and said huge thing is gone now). I've used that image of Gir ever since I registered here at ANN. The guy running the site even said to go ahead and use the images if you wanted. That's weird.
