I wanted to start a thread for this series and probably one for the upcoming (dub) Gunslinger Girl 2.
I bought the box set of this mainly because it was only $30 and i had sorta liked it. The thing is that, i am now obseesed with and failed to see the beaty in the beggining. So i am going to talk about the animation and all that stuff. First off, the Voice Acting the dub i found now faults in except the girls talked in a whisper which is expected from this kinda series. So not much to say for the VA. Animation This has very stunning animation and as mentioned in the commentary for episode 9 or so it said of how much attention they pay just to the art in italy when Rico and Juan are at an art gallery. The scenes are beatiful and at first i wanted a bloody gun action animebut the animation contributed to the sadness of the series. It almost felt like the gunshots where happening in real life, with good animation. Music Personally i couldn't stand to listen to the music, it killed my ears. The music was basically an oprea. that said some people i heard liked it but i didn't.
Action The action in this series was very real, but there wasn't as much as you'd expect, its more fanservice but really good. A lot of times in the series the action is where it gives the character life and shows what a hard time they've been through. The best episodes are the ones where they have to stop terrorists from bombings and kidnappings. Character Designs and Guns Both are excellent but more on the guns. The guns are very detailed showing every part and when they take it apart. There are no two same designs they are all unique with the way they look. The characters look so lively from the animation but there's only once where i hated them which is where they were at target practice and they looked like stick figures. And last for this is all the girls are very timid but once they hold a gun they can do anything and Triela acts as a mother to everyone since she's the oldest. Fanservice Now this series instead of suffering from fanservice it gains most its respect from me for it. Now from the story the fanservice gives alot on what happened to the girls and really emphasizes them killing and not really knowing that its wrong. They suffer of memory loss and if you watch the last episode, it is teardropful(i'm not going to spoil it). The power in what happens in the beggining is just touching and heartbreaking. The fanservice is so wonderful and i think that because the first series had so much that Gunslinger Girl 2 will focus a lot more on the action which is great. Well, thats all i have for this series, i hope this info inspires you to watch it if haven't already. PS: here's the official english website http://www.gunslingergirl.tv |

I really liked this series because of the character development and the lackadaisical pacing for an action show. In the end, it was really impossible to tell whether what had happened to these girls was right or wrong, justified or not, so you just had to embrace it as a life they had to accept. I do, however, wish the series had been given more closure, but there's a second season, however crappy it may be, so I can trust that the story is not ended on the "Ode to Joy under the stars" scene that was meaningful, but not enough, even for a character-based show.
Anyway...fanservice? Fanservice? WHAT fanservice? There wasn't any fanservice unless you're talking about little girls lugging around guns. They were shown in their undergarments occasionally, like once, but... what are ya, a pedo? |

Ah...no. Learn something new every day, huh? My apologies, by the way. This is fanservice, by definition |

Gunslinger Girl threads Here and here.
GG2: Il Teatrino thread Here. On a personal note, I've only seen the first season of GG, was impressed with the character study aspect of it all. A few of the girls seemed a little one-dimensional, as if their presence was merely to satisfy a cliché... But Henrietta was developed wonderfully and carried the series for me. |
