These films are only shown on 200-300 theatre screens, which in the USA, would an extremely small release. Blockbusters get shown on 3,000 screens (or more), so that's why they can earn so much more money.

Also, Japanese films do not eat up even a small percentage of money that a Hollywood special-effects blob takes to create, so they can survive on the smaller market.

I believe it's because the Japanese don't regularly go to movie theaters.

Hey GATSU, it only dropped 7.4% the 2nd weekend.
My prediction is holding up well. Laughing

Until not too long ago, Japanese theaters were dominated by small single (or few) screen theaters owned or affiliated by the distributors (like Toho, so those Toho theaters only show Toho films).

It's only recently that Japan is beginning to experience the American-style mega-multiplexes with multiple screens of movies from multiple distributors.

Thanks for the data on Japanese theaters and attendance. It should make sense, as I've heard that many top revenue films are anime, and many of the rest are imports (U.S. blockbusters). I guess I've never watched a modern, live action Japanese film that I could even stand besides Kamikaze Girls, which I loved. But then, KG is sort of like anime anyway with the bad-ass bitch meets gothic loli theme.
