I'd like to start a thread here about this series. From what I've read from the different posts here so far, it seems that poeple have mixed views about this series. Some love it, some find it mediocre.

Personally, I love it very much. I've watched up to episode 10 now, pushing Noir (watch up to eposide 17) to the sideline. And so far, everything has been exciting.

First of all though, the language. Someone has mentioned that Russian suits the series better because of the setting or something. I cannot disagree more. It definitely is set in Japan. All the road signs are in japanese. Episode one had that incident in the japanese restaurant. Episode 3 mentioned about that guy and his love-doll Jerry android making a run for Fukuoka.

Second, the characters. All of them look like they belong to the yakuza. Batou? He looks like a pimp with his ponytail and blond hair (don't mean to offend anyone, just my point of view). Togusa looks the most like a cop, but that's maybe because he's the only non-cyborg around in Section 9. Ishikawa looks like some martial arts master. Boma looks like that robot in Shirow's other work Appleseed, the big tall one (taller than Briareos) who speaks in bar codes (in the Dark Horse english translation anyway). Saitou looks like your typical yakuza with that black patch over his left eye. Pazu (sometimes the subs have him called basses) looks like someone out of the 60s. Disco dancing anyone?

Third, the cars. I love cars, but the CGI work for the cars isn't too exciting. Batou's Lancia Stratos (love that car) is very nice though the others look kinda weak. Maybe that's just the way it is in the future.

The mecha. Typical Shirow, with his spider tanks. Of course that's reminicent of Patlabor too, but spider tanks are rare in Patlabor. Mostly bipedal mecha there (it was the heyday of the Gundam stories). If you've read Appleseed, it will all look familiar to you.

Any other comments? I'd love to hear what you guys and gals think of this great series.

Regarding those Section 9 Tachikomas (spider tanks). From reading the GITS graphic novel, I had the impression that they had male personas. I'm not being sexist here, just what I feel anyway. So when in the SAC series, those Tachikomas has a female voice and behaved like 5 yr old girly pop groupies, it came as a surprise.

I've not read the graphic novel, but I loved the Spider Tanks in GITS SAC!.
I've always felt that if artificial intelligence evolved to a point we see in GITS, then it would much safer to give the droids the personality of intelligent children rather than adults. I also have to disagree with the notion they sounded 'female', as most small children have high pitched voices!.

I won't be able to comment on the intelligence level of the tachikomas. They might have been given IQ levels equivalent to a young child. And it did appear that they were very playful too.

But they are evolving constantly. Notice how they could fool the female androids in Section 9 (the ones wearing red and looking like multiple sets of quintuplets).

I've finished up to episode 18. It's been very good so far. I've not noticed any perceptible drop in the quality of the animation. Everything has been consistently good. But I feel that the story is starting to get brooding and moody. Bateau's been acting up a little.

I liked Bateau's Lancia Stratos. Now that's a rare gem of a car. All the other cars in the series look just slightly better done than Initial D.

I've finished the first season and am working through 2nd GIG now. I really loved the series and I love the Tachikomas. The Tachikoma specials are very cute too.

About someone saying it should be in Russian? I think that is solely based on the fact that the theme is in Russian. A great theme by the way. 2nd GIG's theme is good too, also in Russian.

As for the characters, I like the wide variety that the show has.

I think I enjoy this show better than the movie. But I am still looking forward to Innocence.

Edit: I'd like to add a question. Did anone see the Hellboy movie and think that Hellboy's father looked just like Chief Aramaki?

What did you mean when you said the theme is in Russian? Did you mean that the opening theme song was sung in Russian? I must say I didn't understand the opening theme song, it sounded French to me.

I loved the tachikomas too, but they started to get a little rebellious. I'm still at episode 18 so I don't know what finally happened to them.

On the whole, I really liked GITS, series and movie. I prefer my anime babes to be tough, independent individuals. Motoko fits that bill to a T.

I know that there are at least 6 episodes of the second season that have aired on TV.

Well, I'm only 5 episodes in, so I can't say wether it is better yet, but it is very good.

The opening theme song for both seasons is sung mostly in Russian, with a bit of English thrown in and some Latin (I think it's Latin). There was no French in either theme song.

Would something like HAL had been more appropriate?

I'm afraid I can't do that Major...

It would not even had been half as interesting. I mean, the perceived gender of those tachikomas isn't important. It's the fact that they are still "children" in their level of AI development, and how they "mature" as the show progresses. Still, it came as a surprise to me to see that they're presumably female in gender. Reading the manga, I had the impression that they were male. It might be a case of sterotyping on my part.

Another thing I discovered about the TV series is how human Saito is. All along, from reading the manga, I was under the impression that only Togusa was almost fully human, and the rest of them were almost fully cyborg. Certainly Motoko and Bateau. Togusa might have some cyber brain enhancements (part of the job) to enable him to communicate with the other team members on the secure channel but other than that, he's as vulnerable as anyone.

I remember a part of the manga where Motoko was hacked in the back with an axe by a bunch of goon. The axe did no harm than to tear her outfit. That was one of the funnier events in the whole manga. GITS2 manga was more serious, but those little pigsy things (they do resemble Shin-chan) did liven things up a little.

even if you find the beginning a little slow,

the later part of the Laughing Man arc is worth the watch!

Yes, you're right. I've finished up to episode 21 last night (I was watching anime at 2:30 a.m.!) and the Laughing man arc is getting to be very intriguing. I still have not figured out who he is. Heck, he could even be another version of the Puppet Master. In other words, an AI entity with no physical body, simply a randomly generated ghost.

The action is a little sporadic, a bit here and a bit there. But still, series is not all about action and should not be expected to be all about action.

I thought episode 1 set the tone for the later episode pretty well. And that was the only opening sequence that I really liked. The rest of them (at least up till episode 21, so far) were all CGI sequences which I did not really like. It felt like watching a game sequence from FFX

Um, anyone know where I can find the opening, closing or any other song from the TV series in MIDI or MP3 format? I've tried searching the web but found nothing. Would really love to have them in my mobile as ring tones.
