Also chiming in to say that this is highly unusual. I've never had it happen, though I don't buy nearly as much anime as I should period, let alone from them. My last order had plenty bargain bin things in it, and they all came in excellent condition. The backorder stuff I had in the order came pretty quickly, as well. I hope you get this sorted out!

The Right Stuf aren't perfect and mistakes can and do happen, but compared to dealing with most retailers their customer service is a breath of fresh air. I've bought anime from a dozen different retailers at least and when something goes wrong I'd much rather be talking to TRSI than most of the rest.

Thanks for posting your personal offer to help Shawne. That sort of direct involvement goes a long way toward showing folks what TRSI is really made of.

This is turning into a bit of a love fest for Rightstuf, but they deserve it so I'll chime in as well. All the anime I own (Besides the few bootlegs I bought on accident years ago) has come through RightStuf. They were always well packaged, no scuffs/dings, and well priced. Your experience is definitely a wildcard, these guys go out of their way to make sure everything is solid. Plus, the fact that when I buy a DVD from RS I know 100% its legit and not a bootleg gives me that extra peace of mind.

I've recently ordered from them for my 4th time, and it just shipped out yesterday (I've yet to get it, I expect it by Monday barring the post office being jerks to me). I've gotten everything well packaged (unlike Best Buy who threw 2 DVDs in an oversized box and put newspaper on top and nothing else), but on my first order during the great Geneon sale, it took forever to get here. Since then it hasn't taken very long at all, and barring the postman leaving the package of manga on the doorstep when it had been pouring for the past few days and was set to again later that day (my mom home, since they were b-day gifts for me and got it inside before the books got wet, she opened the box to make sure that they were ok since apparntly the box was half soaked, of course I ordered and knew what was in there anyway, no surprises ruined here), which I would've blamed on the post office (they've ruined several of my magazines before), I haven't had a problem. Other than the Geneon sale, everything has gotten here pretty quickly, even with free shipping.

This marks my first time buying an art box from them though, here's hoping it arrives here just fine!

I've yet to need to deal with customer service, so I don't really have any input on that.

Well, this has been my beef with them as well. If they can “catch” it and ship it in one box, why not take care of the customer and refund the shipping charge of the second order?

When I started to examine the discs, I found most of them to be in mediocre condition. The artbox, however, is in terrible condition. There are stains on the top of it, the image on the front is cut (as if with a razor blade - I didn't use a sharp object to open the box, and I opened it on the opposite side of where the artbox was).

RightStuf has always done a very good job of replacing damaged items for me. I would give them a B+ for this. Only Amazon has done better, (in my experience) as they will pay for the return shipping if is their problem. Once again it goes back to the shipping department. If it is damaged going into the box then there is going to be a problem when you get it. As to the actual packaging, most of the time it is A+; comparable to the packaging of items I get from Japan.

My question is: What kind of experiences have other people had with RightStuf? They've been around for a long time, and I've heard a lot of people talk about getting items through them. But, with this being my first experience, I can honestly say that I'd be more than happy to pay retail rather than order through them.
Should I give them a second chance, or is this a common occurrence?

If you can get around their shipping department acting like a whole different company (at times) then keep buying from them. For the overall buying experience, they have got to be one of the top three internet sources for Anime in the U.S. I only make online purchases from a select few internet sites. RightStuf will always be on my short list of “approved” sites. It should probably be on yours.

Oh! And as Isikari pointed out, when it is from TRSI it is 100% legit. You want to talk poor quality, bad packaging, etc. just purchase a bootleg by accident.

What was the process? Did you ask, or was it automatic? Both times I had to send something back I received quick service and prompt replacement, but no offer to pay for return shipment or any credit posted after the fact. Maybe you spend more money with them?

Well, I heard back from the customer service department, and everything has been taken care of. The damaged item is being replaced, and the little bit of overcharge for shipping has been refunded. So, I am pretty satisfied.

I knew RightStuf to be one of the biggest anime stores on the internet, and certainly the most popular. You don't get popular from experiences like the one I had at first. So I am chalking that one up to just a bit of bad luck.

I have placed another order with RightStuf. After their customer service was so helpful and friendly, and everyone here saying they had great experiences with them, I decided to give them another chance. I just ordered the items, so I haven't received them or anything yet, but I will certainly share this new experience I have when the items arrive.

Thanks for everyone's comments, and thanks especially to shawnek for willingness to help get the issue settled.

For the future, just try to wait until you can put together $50 worth of stuff before you order, for the free shipping. If I ever need just a little bit more, I always have cheap stuff in my saved item list to throw in to bump it over.

or do what I do and make a $50 purchase, even when all I want is a $10 item. Overspendage FTW!

Is the free shipping actually good? I've never once gotten it.

YES. The packaging great the length of time is a respectable week (assuming they have everything in stock... which is rarely a problem.)

I have never really had any problems with rightstuf. I've gotten stuff even with the economy shipping when I have ordered under $49 for certain items in like 2 or 3 days instead of the usual week or so I some times notice. The only problems I have had recently were credit card problems which have occurred with my last order 3 times now grr.

Shawne Kleckner has your answer.

Our policy is that should we make an error, we will reimburse the customer to have the items shipped back and we will replace them at our expense. If it is not our error, we will request the customer to pay shipping to return the item and we will pay the shipping to reship a new copy to the customer. We also do offer cross-shipping in that we will bill you for the new items sent to you, when requested, and credit you for the items returned upon receipt.

Our return policy is available on the website and we do not at this time offer return labels, as they aren't supported by our software. Please note that if the cause of the problem is our fault, I will always take care of the customer.

To sum it up, Right Stuf will pay for return shipping if the problem is their fault. The process is not automatic, and you would have to request reimbursement.
