1) Love the new steaming video viewer and content on ANN! I get better streaming content through you than I do CR (with my paid account), for their content! Anything I stream from CR directly suffers from "the stutters" during playback.

Nice Player - good work. Thank you to Justin and anyone else responsible, your work is appreciated.

I actually just finished watching Natsume Yujincho which I enjoyed; very funny.

2) Moribito is the Business! Beautifully animated and well adapted (the book was a bit of a mess and a bit vague, with a rushed ending) with a great dub cast. The script/adaptation is, in my opinion, better than the book (I've read the first two books in the Moribito series).

Balsa is the sh*t! Total badass! Full Stop. Anime needs more strong, positive female characters like her!

I'd recommend this series to anyone, even those looking to cut their teeth.

3) Zac: Drink a bottle of Tussin, you sound horrible, mate. Flu? Resp. Inf.?

4) Speaking of Piracy/Samurai Champloo... does ANYONE know where to purchase Japanese music online? I've been looking for Nujabes's (Seba Jun) catalog of work and coming up empty.

I understand the collector attitude. A good deal of the anime I watch are things that have not been and probably never will be licensed, or if they were, finding the DVDs is nigh on impossible. Nana Toshi Monogatari just got fansubbed, and I'm still working my way through Vifam and Dragonar.

As for cons, I haven't noticed too much horribleness at MegaCon, but I suspect it's partly due to the comic crowd being a lot older and mature than your average anime fan, and it makes up about half of the convention. I guess MegaCon can't grow quite as large as AX or Otakon because Orlando is kind of out of the way, but the city has a lot of amenities and pull with all of the attractions and such.

It was nice to finally hear a good conversation on your anime piracy views. I think something that people forget about on these forums is that people are rarely 100% for or against piracy (kind of like no one's 100% democrat/republican thing). We're on a pretty good path away from piracy with online streaming being more common. So of course it's manga's turn to cause a ruckus.

Hearing about Otakon is always fun. I never paid attention enough to realize that AX is trade-based non-profit and Otakon is educational based. It makes all the difference. I will always root for Ota to stay volunteer based simply because that's why their one of the more fun cons to go to. After all, if you're not having fun then it becomes work and no one wants to put in those kinds work hours if you're not getting paid.

Pedo bears and yaoi paddles... I don't think there will ever be a dull moment in ANNcast.

Don't you hate it when you have constipation while trying to do the intro for a podcast? It's terrible.

Come to Romania, ask a random guy on the street, write down the answer Very Happy. Or you could just ask me. Very Happy

Anyway, nice talk about piracy.

I can tell when I switched from Pirate to collector.

After playing Super Robot Taisen, I fell in love with it, and I began to notice that it and things like it would never come out in english unless people began to buy it. So I decided that it would start with me. The result is that I have bought all three games that have come out, and I was so dedicated to this type of things that I bought Sakura Wars V just to support it. Which was great as I loved Sakura Wars V.

I have begun to buy back things I fansubbed like Love Hina, and Tenchi Muyo! Universe, and I just bought the entire series of G Gundam.

For me, it's not that I have to have stuff. I just want it. Simple. I don't really care about legality for it's own sake. I care about ethics. If I can't support it then why not? If something isn't available in R1 then I'll absolutely pirate it. It's definitely a bit of a gray area if you're just claiming that you can't support it because you can't afford it. For this reason, I try to avoid using that as an excuse and just buy shit if it's available in R1. I don't necessarily begrudge people who do though.

In the past, I pirated everything. I don't really feel guilty about that. I was just starting to get into anime. There was no chance in hell of me going out and buying stuff on DVD. I didn't even know you could get stuff on DVD. Actually, to some extent you couldn't at least for someone like me. Living in Canada and out in the suburbs and being a teenager with no transportation or credit card for online orders, you're really pretty limited in terms of what's available to you. Eventually I graduated, got a job and a credit card and now I buy everything from the US online.

Here's a weird moral question: Is it ethical to borrow a friend's DVDs if they're pirated? I actually did that a lot when I first got into anime.

P.S. I'm surprised to hear Zac talk about pirating because he 'can't wait'. He seemed pretty opposed to that kind of thing following Brian's recent Answerman column. (Not calling you a hypocrite, I'm just genuinely surprised and curious).

Baltimore: If it wasn't fucked up, we wouldn't have The Wire! I think we have a new city slogan.

"There's nothing inherently wrong with the Pedo Bear. It's what you do with the Pedo Bear." - Jim Vowles

This is the first time I really wished ANN allowed signatures.

This just in: Anime nerds not having wild n' crazy sexual encounters straight out of a porno! Shocking!

Wow. This was definitely one of the better ANNCasts and that's saying something because they're all pretty fun.

Edited: Sorry, I said something I shouldn't have. I'm not feeling well today and posted before I thought.

^ I'm sure your argument there is super nuanced and intelligent and actually takes the full personal scope of the matter into consideration and in no way is just beating on me like a trash can because it makes you feel self-righteous. I'm sure.

What I was talking about when I mentioned the "Can't wait" thing - and I'm pretty sure I stated this very clearly - was a specific situation where I saw something legitimately, it was then made unavailable to me, so I preordered the Bluray set and then downloaded the episodes so I could enjoy them in the interim.

That's a specific situation where I've defined my own ethical parameters and abided by them, and the artist got paid.

Yeah, apologies for this; I was feeling horrible when we recorded but we were out of time. I'll be bright and sunny next time, promise.

As for the sponsor, it was a one-week deal, but we've got more coming.

Good listening...

About Piracy: It's no secret that I'm against it, and pretty much regardless of the reason, as I know in the long term it's not helpful to me even though I may get some instant gratification in the short term if I did so. Like one of my favorite series, Case Closed, I need to convince people to buy it (like Zoidberg "I'll take eight!") as it will be a stronger signal to get more of it.

Partly this is due to that I was a collector before I was an anime fan, playing CCGs, RPGs, and CMGs well in high school. I considered myself an anime fan when I was in college. So the understanding of "buy this stuff" so they'll continue making it/licensing more (Heroclix was so awesome) Additionally fansubs didn't play a part in my becoming an anime fan nor are they playing a part now in my continuation of it. I have patience, I have other hobbies that can keep my time while I wait.

Trust me when I hear excuses like "I'm poor" and "I live far away from stores." fall flat to me, watch "Hoosiers", those cornfields are where I live, and I'll be honest those cornfields are still there. Where you have to drive at least 20 minutes just to get necessities like food, and an hour for books and DVDs. So yeah I had to wait a bit just to get a $3.95 pack of cards, I think I can wait for a DVD...

Hearing people talk about owning music on vinyl as if it was some sort of exotic eccentricity makes me feel really [expletive] old.

Well I still have some records that were given to me when I was young (Disco Duck comes to mind.) So it's not a foreign concept (and also bands are releasing new records like Alice and Chain "Black Gives Way to Blue" is also on a record.)

Serious Kudos to you Zac for buying the tickets for showings you download because you can't get to; I don't think I've ever encountered a fan nowadays who does something like that.

Thanks for a good podcast again guys, it's nice to hear your stances on the piracy subject. As others have said, it's never black and white, just many shades of grey. What matters is knowing when you're supporting the industry and when you know you're well over the abuse line.

Good to hear from Jim too, I've always been interested in the fan run con's over there.

Just thinking on what Justin said about laziness; I used to be big on the downloading software front when I was younger (fight the evils of Microsoft!...) but nowdays if I type a search into Google for some certain software package all I get is "sign up to this forum, ring this mobile number, and then jump through 3 flaming hoops backwards to download the rip here!!
I'm like, meh, I'll buy it, it's easier... (plus the whole I'm a morally responsible working adult who's been through the business food chain and isn't so hating of the institution any more, thing)

Sometimes free can price itself out of the market!
