I've watched four more anime since my previous post, all of which were entertaining.
Kill la Kill. In the wake of my disappointment with the original Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt this is yet another series I approached with low expectations and, once more (see my posts above), I was agreeably surprised. Whereas I didn't give a flying fig for the characters of Panty or Stocking let alone Garterbelt, I became invested in the many tribulations of Ryuko and Mako, and even the antagonist Satsuki. Thanks to that investment I enjoyed the familiar Studio Trigger hyper-exaggeration more than in shows like P&SwG or, say, Gurren Lagann. There's nothing feminine about main character Ryuko - to me she's just a male shounen character, drawn the way she is for fanservice purposes. More fun was her ever loyal sidekick Mako Mankanshoku who, like the best clowns, had me smiling the moment she appeared in any scene - even before she did anything stupid though logical in her own peculiar world view. Rating: a high good. Like anything I've seen from Trigger it's fluff, but this was better than most. Jormungand. An anime with an adult cast (pet bodyguard Jonah excepted) is rare and to be savoured. Watching this I couldn't help but constantly compare it with the Black Lagoon franchise. Both tell the tale of a quasi-military enterprise seeking to profit from the sale of illicit goods - very specifically weapons in Jormungand's case. Whereas BL has 5½ interesting characters (Revy, Rock, Dutch, Benny, Balalaika and, perhaps, Roberta), J has just 2½ (protagonist Koko, Jonah and, perhaps, Koko's brother Kaspar). Unsurprisingly, BL has better character interactions and, in addition, higher production standards all round. Where J shines are in it's more credible story telling and in the unhinged but compelling main character, Koko Hekmatyar. It's violent, bloody and blackly funny. Rating: another high good. The Rolling Girls. What a glorious mess. It's storytelling is unfocussed, while the main characters aren't portrayed closely enough to invest in them. This post-apocalyptic romp of a road trip across Japan by four motorcycle riding girls, one of whom is an alien, and whose leader wants to mediate between feuding gangs is notable for its gorgeous visuals and high-energy hyperbole. A prettier and less vicious version of a Studio Trigger series you might say. When it does manage to get its disparate threads working all at once the outcome is marvellous. Unfortunately, it didn't happen often enough; however, the climax to episodes 7 & 8 - simultaneously hilarious and wondrous - had me laughing so much I was in tears. To quote Nick Creamer in his episode review, "Explosions and shamisen solos and friendship and flying buddhas - there's not much more I could really ask for in a scene." If only there were more of it. Rating: good. The highlight of the last 3 weeks was Jormungand Perfect Order, the direct continuation of the main story line of the first series, where it ups the stakes, draws all the narrative threads together and brings to the foreground the intriguingly ambiguous US spymaster George "Bookman" Black who seems to be based on the RL journalist George Bookman. I found myself hooked by Koko's deranged / inspired plan to impose peace upon the world. Rating: very good.
My inexpertly stitched images of Koko Hekmatyar give her an appropriately ghostly appearance. I've just started watching the Discotek release of Chie the Brat which means, given it's 64 episodes long and I usually manage 3-4 episodes a day, I'll be occupied by it for the next 3 weeks or so. |

The Asterisk War: Finished watching it for the first time in years, and like most shows I watched long ago I only remembered bits & pieces of it going in. Honestly an enjoyable and solid show with interesting characters, settings & powers. While it may seem like a harem show it's really not one, with the romance part taking a backseat to everything else. No one character is outright stronger than the others, and teamwork is utilized often to win fights, especially in the Phoenix Festa. S2 ends with the main cast preparing for the Grips Festa among other things in-between. The music is also good, with some of my favorites being the S1 ED (Maaya Sakamoto's Waiting for the Rain) and the S2 OP (Shiena Nishizawa's The Asterisk War). The voice cast is also solid, from Eric Scott Kimerer and Kira Buckland as MCs Ayato and Julis to Sarah Anne Williams & Brianna Knickerbocker as Saya & Kirin and Kaiji Tang as Dirk (Kaiji especially does a good job at making Dirk a scumbag). While unlikely since S2 came out in 2016 I do hope a S3 is made in the future.
The Great Cleric: I watched a few episodes years ago but then stopped, probably due to other shows being on at the time. Having watched all of it recently I thought it was decent though nothing mindblowing, and while I did enjoy my time with it there are better shows out there both isekai wise & in general as it didn't really do a whole lot with its main premise (a healer who tries to be fair in a world where healers exploit their powers for wealth). Maybe it would've if it was more than 1-cour but who knows? To Your Eternity: Since S3 recently started airing I went back and watched the first 2 seasons (never finished S2 the first time I saw it). Honestly I really enjoyed them both & don't really get the dislike for S2. Most of the new characters were memorable, and Bon especially goes from a spoiled prince obsessed with the throne to one who focuses more on the bigger picture & really comes into his own as a leader alongside Fushi. Even Kahaku is a pretty respectable guy who despite wanting to be near Fushi as past Hayase descendants wanted to be rarely forced the issue & in the end spoiler[made the ultimate sacrifice to pay for his & his knocker's sins.] In S1 I admit I cried over March's death, something I didn't do the first time around. I admit the reveal that Fushi spoiler[gained the ability to bring some of the dead back to life was a surprise,] but I honestly like how it was handled since spoiler[ aside from the princess it requires Fushi form a solid bond with someone in order to bring them back.] It seems the main criticism is that "the animation is not like S1E1 was, therefore the show is not as good as it could be", something I saw a lot of in the ANN reviews. To that I say so what if the animation of later episodes are not like E1 was? Get over it already. Is it possible the show'd be better if all episodes were animated like E1 was? Perhaps, but the fact is they're not animated like it was, so constantly complaining about it won't do any good. Also maybe it's just me but I barely noticed a difference in animation quality in any of the episodes in any season, and even if it is noticeable to some I think the show overall is solid enough to make up for it. Loner Life in Another World: Similar to The Great Cleric I thought it was decent though nothing mindblowing. I liked how Haruka initially tried to avoid getting isekaied to no avail with the consequence of having mediocre leftover skills as a consequence of arriving late but later tried to make the most of it once he was isekaied. spoiler[The bullies being setup to be the main villains of the first half only to be killed off was surprising but the reveal of who their killer was made sense since we saw him with them earlier in the show.] I'd say a criticism is that it didn't utilize its large cast very well (probably another 1-cour consequence but who knows?), and while the same could be true for its premise at least he tried multiple times to make it work. Overall a decent show with a decent use of its main premise & cast. May I Ask for One Final Thing?: Surprisingly enjoyable so far with a likable MC in Violet with a rather unique personality (she reminds me of Vi from League of Legends ("Punch first. Ask questions while punching."). Some may say spoiler[the twist of Terenezza being a reincarnator makes the show an isekai] but I don't see it that way. Just because a show has spoiler[reincarnation] doesn't make it spoiler[an isekai.] Regardless I look forward to see more of this show when I can. The Banished Court Magician Aims to Become the Strongest: 2 episodes in and it's pretty enjoyable so far. The basic premise is nothing new but the reveal that the anti-commoner mindset seems to be exclusive to one city is. The main 4 also seem to have good chemistry between each other, and even when they bicker at times they're still good friends & have skills that compliment each other well. It's still too early to tell how things will turn out but I am curious to see for myself. My Dress-Up Darling S2: A solid continuation to the series, with the dub cast continuing to improve in their roles (Paul Dateh (first ever role btw) & Amanda Lee especially). The return of the spoiler[Inui's] was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. I also really liked how they handled spoiler[Chitose & his fallout with his ex-girlfriend]. spoiler[Cross-dressing] is still seen as taboo to many people for some reason (to me they're just spoiler[clothes], and as long as you're not intentionally trying to hurt anyone with it then who cares what you spoiler[wear]?), and Japan doesn't exactly have the best history with this topic, so the fact that they handled it with respect & maturity here must be commended. I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years & Maxed Out My Level S2: Just as enjoyable as S1 was with interesting new characters & some development for old ones. Obviously since it's a Slice of Life not much can be done but for a show like this I think that's fine. I definitely plan to watch it again in the future. That aside I saw in both the ANN review & its thread that people really didn't like the wedding scene for the twins & thought it was awful. When I read them I was like, did we watch the same show? Obviously it wasn't a serious wedding (they weren't getting married for real), everyone in the show knew that going in, but the twins especially still had fun and enjoyed it, so I honestly don't know where the hate is coming from. As for me I thought it was really sweet & heartwarming & saw nothing wrong with it honestly. Last edited by Flash33 on Mon Nov 03, 2025 11:12 pm; edited 3 times in total |

I have watched a ton of anime in recent months, now I feel an anime burnout, therefore my consumption of fiction will be restricted to manga.
86 EIGHTY-SIX Part 2 (2021) EIGHTY-SIX must be one of the most overrated anime shows of all time. I just see a lot of vapid drama saying to the viewer "war is horror, war is horror, war is horror, ..." over and over without anything more sophisticated besides this. The art and animation is good, but the character designs are very plain, and, also, this season has a loli to entertain the viewer, but I think she was a mostly boring loli compared to expectations. Being generous, I rate it 5/10, but I might lower in the near future. Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE (2025) Dr. Stone is one of the most entertaining anime franchises and this season didn't disappoint me at all, it is everything that made the earlier seasons entertaining. I also love its rather conventional but still original art style. Overall a very good show, but it doesn't reach the artistic heights of the greatest anime, my rating is 8/10. The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 (2025) After I watched the first season of Apothecary Diaries and I didn't get it why it is so good (I rated it 6/10), I decided to watch the second season with my mind more focused on trying to "get it" rather than being critical of the show and having low expectations like I was in the first season. I do think I got it much better this time, although I don't think its an artistic masterpiece of anime (it is based on a light novel and I have never watched an anime based on a light novel that I think its a masterpiece), it is very very good stuff: well made, executed, written. A top of the line show, 9/10. The Rising of the Shield Hero Seasons 3-4 (2023-25) Shield hero is pure isekai trash, but it is good isekai trash. It is fairly entertaining and I like the art style and animation. The story was fairly bland, so I give it a generous, 7/10. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (2024) Meh show. The art and animation are at the cutting edge, but the character designs are looking a bit too dollish for my tastes. Anime of a few years ago had that rougher edge cartoon look that I think fits anime better than this porcelain doll look of current character designs. However, I found the writing to be mostly bland and uninteresting. 6/10. Simoun (2006) After re-watching it last year, I decided to do another re-watch to confirm that it is now one of my favorite animes of all time, and it indeed is. I like it so much because it is wonderfully dramatic, to an extreme degree without it feeling forced or artificial (unlike The 86, which is basically a badly executed version of Simoun, which has much higher ratings in anime sites mainly because it is a newer show and also perhaps because it lacks the yuri/gender bender stuff). 10/10. My-Otome (2005-2006) Watched this after re-watching Simoun and deciding to check other anime that scratched the same ich and this one was recommended. It is not that similar to Simoun, which is a much more dramatic war drama-love story, while My Otome is an sci-fi-fantasy action show with yuri-adjacent characterization. Still its a very good show, 8/10 and I was tempted to raise it to 9/10, but decided to not do grade-inflation of my anime list. My-Otome Zwei (2006) Its a pretty forgettable and bland OVA using the characters from My Otome. Animation and art were excellent for 2006, however. 6/10. I'm in Love with the Villainess (2023)
A yuri-show that I watched because it is regarded by some as one of the best recent yuris, in this case its an isekai yuri, since everything today is an isekai. KONOSUBA -An Explosion on This Wonderful World! (2023) Watched this because I am a fan of the 1st season of Konosuba, but everything else in the franchise is pretty bland. However, I did like this show a bit more than other Konosuba seasons, my rating is 7/10. New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT (2025) It is well made and animated, but it lacks the sense of freshness and general creativity of the 1st season, instead it often looks like it is trying too hard to be transgressive. My rating is, generously, 7/10. Toward the Terra (2007)
Watched because it was recommended for fans of Simoun (like My Otome, although both shows a very very different, both have indeed certain similarities with Simoun), I was greatly surprised by the quality of this anime. It really stands head and shoulders above the sloppy stuff made in recent years, adding credibility to the thesis that the quality of anime peaked around the late 2000s. Epic science fiction anime with great characters. My rating is 9.5/10. A must for science fiction anime fans. Its world-building and social criticism also reminds me of From the New World. From the New World (2012-2013) One of my favorite anime shows of all time, I decided to re-watch this masterpiece. It is indeed a masterpiece, one of the greatest shows of all time, ever made for television. I do notice I slightly liked Simoun over this show because of my particular biased tastes for art with a strong sense of theatricality, but From the New World is unmatched across anime and in fact several dimensions of media in its accurate and intelligent depiction of social alienation and bigotry. My rating is, of course, 10/10. Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004) A classic show, I liked its depiction of "ugly" anime characters, something that is rare in more recent shows. It was well made and directed, with compelling main character trying to find his place in the world. However, I didn't identify much with the drama of the show, in regards to anime shows about bands I do prefer the Moe shows like K-On and Bochii the Rock. Still, this show is well made enough for me to give it a 8/10 rating. |

I've watched stuff, but I'm currently watching Dr. Stone Science Future. I liked the first season of Dr. Stone, but somehow wasn't too hot on the second season. I don't remember why the 2nd season didn't gel with me, but somehow it soured Dr. Stone for me for years. More seasons came out and I wasn't all that interested, but I kept hearing good stuff about Dr. Stone so I finally decided to try getting back into it starting with the Ryusei special. Took a little while to orient myself, it's a large cast and lots of stuff happened in season 2 but I read some episode summaries on wikipedia to get a little reminder. Didn't take too long to remember the basics.
I definitely made the right choice giving Dr. Stone another chance. I remembered how I liked the large positive energy of the show, and the Ryusei special, New World and Science Future have all been entertaining. I've come to really like the large cast of characters and their quirky personalities. A special shout-out to Science Future's first opening CASANOVA POSSE by ALI. Omg, I love it. It so perfectly encapsulates the vibe I get from Dr. Stone. Flashy with lots of energy, just makes you wanna dance yourself. I only got a couple episodes left of Science Future's first part so the opening is gonna change soon which is a shame, I could listen to this another 12ish episodes. |

Chie the Brat. This Isao Takahata social comedy from 1981-3 pokes fun at the intersecting worlds of children, adults and cats in the mean streets of Osaka circa 1960s/70s, through the eyes of the rumbunctious school girl Chie Takamoto. Her parents - separated, technically reunited during the series run, but unable to form a meaningful relationship - couldn't be more different. She's sweet and patient while he refuses to work, preferring to gamble, brawl and hustle the local yakuza. The series shines most when Chie must negotiate her way through the mystifying worlds of the many eccentric adults in her life. It doesn't matter that the animation and artwork are minimal (and unlike 21st century expectations) or that the series loses its bite somewhat in the last few episodes; it still gets an excellent rating.
Chie is left to run the family horumonyaki bar thanks to her idle father. She doesn't mind making a profit. Yamanaka Sadao ni Sasageru Manga Eiga 'Nezumikozō Jirokichi'. I saw this as part of the 2025 Japanese Film Festival doing the rounds of the Oz capital cities. It's a short film paying homage to the 1930s director Sadao Yamanaka who died of dysentery in the Japanese army in 1938 aged 28. A talk presented before the film (which was shown along with one of his 3 surviving films from the 24 films he directed - all period films) suggested he was drafted because the militarist government took umbrage at the humanist tone of his work. The anime is bookended by short animated scenes of Yamanako directing one of his lost films, then recreates the same film, which is about "The Rat" who steals from the rich and helps the poor. He's always one step ahead of both the authorities and the yakuza. The anime is directed by the veteran Rintaro who directed, among other things, Kimba the White Lion in the 1960s. Rating: good. With 2026 approaching I aim to spend the rest of the year finishing off any 2006 anime with a very good (8.00) or higher score according to ANN's bayesian rankings. There's 22 of them, 8 of which I haven't seen before: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I Honey and Clover II Ouran High School Host Club NANA School Rumble: 2nd Semester Gintama Strawberry Panic! Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple If I can manage all of them - except Gintama which has 201 episodes - I'll have watched 43 titles from 2006, which I think is one of the best years in anime. I'll be able to do a top 40 - woohoo! On that note, I watched the first season of School Rumble. To me a rumble is a fight, which is stretching things a bit for this genial and funny romcom. Every single character is lovable and every single one of them is an idiot - especially the two leads - delinquent bikie Kenji Harima and the object of his love Tenma Tsukamoto who wouldn't notice a lamp post even if she walked into it. He suffers no end of indignities while she totally misinterprets everything he does, not that he's much better. The rest of the cast are likewise charming and silly. Even by the standards of the time, the artwork and animation are mediocre, so it doesn't stand up well by today's much higher standards. In addition, the character types aren't so fashionable these days. Ratings: TV series - good; 2 episode OVA (School Rumble: Extra Class) - decent. |

My understanding is also that in reference to schools, rumble means a fight, faction vs. faction rather than individuals. When School Rumble was first showing, the publicity made a joke that no rumble occurred.

I watched the School Rumble franchise back when I first got into anime in 2009 and remember it quite fondly. I'd be willing to bet it stands up to the test time.

Guruguru mawaru, guruguru mawaru
That opening has been etched on/in/onto/into/idontknowwhatprepositiontouse my memory. School Rumble is a gem and among my favourite comedy anime. Some weaker episodes and jokes in there hold it back a little bit, but it's still overall a fantastic anime. |

Searching the internet, apparently in British usage, to be rumbled is "to have a secret discovered or to be found out, especially for something you were trying to hide", which makes sense in the context of the anime. It's not something I've encountered in Australia. The original manga was called Sukūru Ranburu - would the mangaka know the British usage?
Perhaps, as Alan45 points out, it was just meant to be silly. Mind you, thinking about the rivalry between the year 2 classes, the "fight" usage might be right. It now has me thinking about Rumbling Hearts, which is the awkward localisation of the original Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (The Eternity You Desire). I'm 5 episodes into the second season, which has a new director who's upscaled the absurdity. |

The use of rumble to refer to a fight is somewhat archaic here in the US. It has the flavor of 1950s slang. Somewhat like what you would hear in the movie Blackboard Jungle or the show West Side Story. To me it mostly refers to a sound such as "the rumble of traffic" or "Thunder rumbled in the distance".
A lot of localization choices have bothered me. Most recently My Dress Up Darling which places the show from Gogo's point of view. I understand a literal translation of the Japanese title is "the bisque doll falls in love" which implies Marin's point of view. Note: Marin is much more like a Barbie doll than a bisque doll but I don't expect they could have called her that. |

FLAG - Episodes - 13 [Final]
A really good series that I have enjoyed watching again a great deal. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it. Revoluntionary Girl Utena - Episode 1 - 6 I've always felt that not having seen Utena thus far in my fandom has been a bit of blind spot in my viewing history so finally time to put that right. During the 00's and 10's nearly every podcast I listened to used to go on about Utena with some sort of regularity so there's a lot of expectation that goes with it for me. I'm enjoying it so far. Heavy An slightly odd 1990 OVA clearly influenced by a mix of 80's Rocky and karate films. Nothing special but lots of violent action and it entertaining so didn't disappoint. Ranma 1/2 (2024) - Episode 19 Find my podcasts: Retro Anime Podcast & Retro Mecha Po |

Brings to mind Link Wray.
I think both thematically and dramatically it has one of the best endings I've seen in anime ***** I've managed to get a couple more 2006 anime under my belt, among others. School Rumble: 2nd Semester. A new director in Takaomi Kanasaki for this second season provides a new perspective on the franchise, with the first half being zanier than the original and the second half, along with the following 2 episode OVA School Rumble Sangakki, generally more serious. Everybody is as clueless as ever, and as lovable as ever. The medical condition afflicting Tenma's crush Ooji Karasuma gives the franchise a welcome twist, and, while the mains - bikie Kenji Harima and airhead Tenma Tsukamoto - are at the centre of the madness, secondary characters like Tenma's unfailingly generous and sweet younger sister Yakumo and poor rich girl Eri Sawachika, give the franchise added interest. In fact, by the end those two had eclipsed Tenma when appearing against Kenji. In Tenma's favour, she does show a welcome depth of character in her response to Karasuma's illness.
I'd been shipping Kenji and Eri from the bonfire dance scene in the first season. In an otherwise screwball franchise they had the most genuine seeming relationship. In the manga School Rumble Z spoiler[they appear together with a child. So sweet.] Rating for both the TV series and OVA: very good. The Concierge is an amusing and fluffy (in multiple senses of the word) film about a young woman - Akino - starting her new job as a concierge in a luxury department store. The catch is, the store is in the middle of a dense forest and caters to anthropomorphised animals. Priority is given to the V.I.A.s - Very Important Animals - who are actually extinct. Unsurprisingly, Akino struggles to adapt to the needs of these demanding customers. It's a simple, pleasant film to watch, with Akino's gangly, often clumsy, earnestness leading to multiple amusing situations. The store is a shrine to conspicuous consumption and self-centredness. That is, until one of Akino's managers points out the animals became extinct because of human greed and exploitation. It's as if the staff - all human - are atoning for our wrongdoings. Rating: good.
Honey and Clover and Honey and Clover II. Yuta loves Hagumi Shinobu loves Hagumi Hagumi loves painting Ayumi loves Takumi M Takumi M loves Rika Rika still loves her deceased husband Takumi N loves Ayumi All the men (young and old) working in the shopping mall where Ayumi's family liquor store is located love Ayumi All the, not otherwise already listed, young men at Ayumi's art school love Ayumi Kazushi loves Miwako Miwako loves her dog
Hagumi Hanamoto & Yuta Takemoto I wasn't able to appreciate his paean to unrequited love when I watched the first season almost 14 years ago. So much so, I didn't bother with the sequel. I suppose at the time I wasn't ready for josei romcoms. Things must have changed since, as now I found it, and it's sequel, a hoot. Mind you, after all this time, I still think the first OP of the first season is one of the best ever. I was much more engaged with the various characters, including pint-sized genius Hagumi (aka Hagu) of whom I'd been most critical in my 2012 post in this thread. I was emotionally invested in their dilemmas and, by the end, felt quite an affection for all them. Most gratifyingly, each of the main characters in the ensemble cast had developed significantly over the two seasons. Having avoided the second season previously, I missed these outcomes. You could say Yuta, Shinobu, Ayumi, the two Takumis and Rika each found their own way to deal with their feelings and, by the end of the franchise, have grown as a result. The first season is the more fun of the two, while the second, with a new director, plays out each individual story and adds in an injury crisis for Hagu. Rating for both: very good.
Ayumi Yamada apologising for breaking hearts. The franchise has many parallels with School Rumble, and I'd been shipping Ayumi and Takumi Nomiya soon after he first appears. In the manga March Comes in Like a Lion spoiler[they have a cameo as a married couple]. |

I am currently watching Sonny Boy. I wanted something that would require my full attention and get me focusing and thinking. I've been watching way too many seasonals lately and a lot that doesn't require much of an attention span. Sonny Boy seems to be something that I will take a lot of way from by the time I finish it.
