What’s the current state of relations between the original creator Nyarla and this production? Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needy_Streamer_Overload) and ANN (person#290667) have both covered the early days of the dispute, but I don’t know what has happened since.

nyarla is at least still mentioned prominently in the credits.

Episode 10 was a wild ride with an interesting mix of animation styles. I was expecting a pixellated fighting game sequence to show up, but I’ll accept spoiler[Purple Lolipop using the Lance of Longinus on KAngel (underscored by the Evangelion-style title card for episode 11 at the end)].

I feel like the Evangelion connection was tacked on to be cheeky, because this episode was very much directly referencing the bible.

A lot of the “rough sketch” section felt like an amalgam of Dostoevsky’s Brothers Karamazov (Smerdyakov proposing to Ivan that the murder of Fyodor is no big deal), and (so I am told) another Russian story, Judas Iscariot, by Leonid Andreyev, in which Judas explicitly frames his relationship with Christ in mercantile terms, yet is perhaps the one who loves Christ the most — similar to Lollipop’s monologue up to the “notice me, sempai!” vibe. I felt like the costumes that Lollipop and KAngel were wearing in that section seemed like Russian traditional garb (or even Russian ecclesiastical trappings).

As I go down this rabbit-hole, I am wondering if the animation style of that part of the episode might be homage to the animation of Yuri Norstein (I think Norstein is known in Japan through promotion by Studio Ghibli).

I think it's likely since pieces of the animation style through that segment do distinctly resemble some of Norstein's famous shorts (based on YouTube clips rather than personal expertise in that field, of course).

I also agree that he Evangelion styling was probably just there to be cheeky since much of the dialog through that scene is adapted or even outright lifted from the books you mentioned. (And I'd expect nothing less given how conspicuously the trio has been playing that theme all along.)

I like that all of the items Lolipop used to defeat KAngel in the end were the gifts that she received from her friends, something Ame lacks.

Perhaps instead of reaching for obscure Russian novels, I should take a hint from the episode title?

But I really don’t remember Jesus Christ, Superstar well enough to know how closely the Lollipop/Judas, KAngel/Christ section paralleled the dynamics of that rock opera (my memory is that the portrayal of Judas, there, was not mercantile, but more political).

In all the versions of the story (Andreyev/Rock opera/Bible) things do not end well for Judas (nor for Jesus, of course). As the reviewer said in the review: it will be interesting to see what comes next, both for Ame and for Lollipop.

(PS., I have been thinking that the photo with her “boyfriend” that Ame shows to Lollipop will show Ame and the plush cat.)

The photo was briefly shown in this episode when Lollipop told KAngel/Ame that her relationship wasn't real during the showdown. It was just the plush cat.

I am also curious if what happened to Judas afterwards will be a factor here or if Judas was just used as flavor and will not be referenced again.

Jesus Christ, Superstar portrays Judas in a more sympathetic light where he feels like his hand is being forced and he actually becomes spoiler[an angel]. So maybe?

Opening with a K-pop-inspired musical number and dance sequence

I didn't make the connection to k-pop. The way I saw it, these characters are all v-tubers if their avatars and personas were real, and the musical number was basically a v-tuber music video.

Yeah, I could totally see Hololive Advent doing a cover of this.

I can vaguely see the resemblance in KAngel's outfit, but definitely not in Lollipop's. I think Roman era Mediterranean style makes more sense for both of them, which would fit with the whole "Jesus and Judas" theme.

They clearly wanted to make the most uncomfortable episode of anime to watch and boy, they sure nailed it.

A frightening amount of talent being applied to create a can’t-look-away bit of horror.

(Usually I watch episodes of this series twice in rapid succession. Maybe not this episode.)

Episode 11 was both dark and - it may be too soon to say "brilliant", but it was pretty amazing. I don't know if I want to put this next to Lain just yet, but this is one that I'm going to revisit for many of the same reasons.

And yeah, this one was a tough watch. I fortunately have not been on the receiving end of what Ame got, but I've seen it happen. I'm honestly not sure what was real vs what was an abstraction vs what was just in her head, but it seems like that's the point. Being chronically online (which I personally am right now, but mostly to follow the news) is going to bend and expand what we consider "real". Is the Internet real? Yeah. Is how it affects our psychology real? You have to say yes.

I've been rewatching the previous episode before watching the new one, and I'll be doing it again, but geez...

I hope this series is getting the attention it deserves. I can see where it wouldn't be everyone's thing, but I have something else to recommend along side "Odd Taxi". NGO will be recommended with caveats, though.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that “Ame” means “Rain”.

Plus the X hair-clip accessory, of course. And the Lain game gets very dark, too.
