Is there any evidence that says it's Toei's fault Pretty Cure is not available in America? I can't imagine many networks jumping to license it themselves. American kids networks have stated multiple times cartoons with female leads do not perform that well. Pretty Cure might just be a case of companies not thinking an action cartoon starring females would do all that well so they passed on it. To my knowledge the first series aired in Canada, but was cancelled. Shoujo just seems like a hard genre to sell in America. Viz have essentially said that Sailor Moon's re-release was riding mostly on nostalgia alone.

You know, cartoons with female leads would perform better if the English versions weren't so disrespectfully and atrociously handled. Vision of Escaflowne, Cardcaptor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew are just three titles that come to mind where the American and Canadian networks basically set such shows up to fail. We know the titles themselves are not to blame; their popularity and quality are not in question. It's the producers of the networks and their awful decisions in adapting such titles that sink the boat. |

I agree that Crystal is far from being a perfect show, however I enjoy every episode to see the story manga adapted, more or less faithfully.
But what I don't get is people complaining the lack of coherence and personality of the show, compared to the old 90s anime. The old show was all but coherent. Sure it had funny moments, but 80% of the first season was so preformatted that it was often very ridiculous: -Every single target by the Shitennou was, coincidentally, linked to the Senshi new friend/activity/interest etc... (ex. Amy likes a park and the garderner is attacked by Nephrite. Rei wins tickets for a cruise, but it's a trap by Jadeite to collect energy. The girls want to participate to a skiing contest (far from Tokyo I guess) and that's just the plot device used by Kunzite to uncover Sailor Moon. And let's not talk about the 7 rainbow crystals demons that were all friends, relatives or someone they just met (except the cat). -In almost each episode, the girls transform, attack the youma but are then overpowered, until Tuxedo Mask throws a... rose! Without the male saviour, Sailor Moon would have died much early in the series. And of course, the famous "Oh but it's Tuxedo Mask!!!", before he has to remember her to throw her attack: "It's your turn Sailor Moon". -I am among the ones who completely despise the constant arguments between Usagi and Rei. Every episode had them throwing snarky comments at each other, Rei being very b*tchy for any reason. The same between Usagi and Mamoru; Usagi and ChibiUsa... Was it really necessary to created these annoying arguments? -People reproach to Crystal Senshi version lacking of personality. I kinda agree with that one, but on the other hand, the old version had them pushed to a very extreme: Ami too much studious or Rei too arrogant and snarky. And let's not forget Usagi who was depicted as a fat, lazy, whiny, stupid clumsy girl. It was funny at the beginning but became so annoying. -The enemies always were competitive and cruel between each others. They never seem to care for their comrades, and even go to the point of killing them. Ex: Beryl kills Jadeite and Zoisite; Zoisite kills Nephrite; the 4 Ayakashi Sisters don't hesitate to betray each others to get Rubeus attention (but he couldn't care them) less; Esmeraude letting Rubeus dying; the Witches 5 killing each others, etc... The relations between the villains was an aspect that always bothered me in the old anime, so it was nice to have the Shitennou getting along for once. -And finally, I know that we are in 2014 and we could expect good animation for the Crystal anime, and also I admit the old show had some good animation, except for several episodes that are really really badly drawns and animated, sometimes even looking so grotesque that it hurts to watch them. For instance, episode 11 (in a theme park) episode 16 (with the bride dress contest) and episode 27 (with the boy who liked Ami) have all the same design, a very bad, sharp, without fluidity... Also, episodes 30 (Rei's grandpa is attacked) and 35 (Zoisite's death) have another kind of very awful design, deformed, sometimes with a lot of "white bubbles" in the eyes and ridiculous animation. As much as I loved the show when I was a teenager, I cannot help to enjoy Crystal much more for what it is, a telling for the manga. I'm not missing Tuxed Mask roses, monsters of the week, stupid arguments between Rei and Usagi, the girls hanging together, talking and laughing (what people miss the most). But yes, I miss a little the secondary characters, specially when their scenes from the manga are skipped in Crystal. |

Cute answer but no; It's a matter of audience for all shows in America and not just specific to marketing Japanese shows. It's kind of like imagining Western versions of shounen romances- the idea of it doesn't even occur to the audience, let alone the creators and producers. Action shows geared towards girls with female leads? You can list individual shows {try a little hard in your case, please. Escaflowne is not the best example} but it's not a marketable genre this side of the Pacific due to cultural differences {"Girls like these things, boys like these things." "But..." "No!". Just look at any toy department. It's easy to tell any show for girls, it's "pink think"} The difference is that the West has to make an audience while Japan only has to make a show. |

I fully admit the 90's version had flaws; my biggest pet peeve being how boy-crazy they made everyone. But here's my recommendation to you: go watch the last two episodes of the first season of the 90's version. Make note of how each Senshi spoiler[is willing to die] in order to make sure Usagi makes it through. Notice how distraught Usagi is over the spoiler[death of her comrades]. *That* is what I miss from Crystal; not the animation (though it could be leagues better in Crystal), nor the touches of humor (which are sorely missed in this adaptation), but the camaraderie. I want Crystal to make me feel like these girls are a team, a team of equals. A team of friends who aren't afraid to comfort each other or give someone a much needed kick in the ass. Because do you know what Crystal feels like to me? A Princess and her servants. The Inner Senshi's existences revolve around Usagi, and not in the cool "I am a knight, you are my lady" kind of way. Because at least the manga--which I don't even like all that much--had the decency to flesh these ladies out to be distinct people, give them opportunities to help save the day, and showed how they honored duty to their Princess above all else (rather than being reminded to do their job by the ghosts of their dead lovers because they're just so goshdarn torn up about it AGH!). |

you are right on the part them thinking it wouldnt preform well, i did mix it up.
animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2014-10-03/.79444 I have to say through he is heavily mistaken the niche apeal of precure here, it would be worth a try. They could atleast decide to simulcast one season and base upon that if they continue. But no instead they base it on Futawari precure which aired at a time where it simply went under in the pure over saturation with Magical Shoujo anime in the west. |

And yet even more female centered romance stuff like Gekkan Shōjo Nozaki-kun is licensed . And even more obscure stuff like Aikatsu gets simulcast. there isnt a big difference in girlyness between precure and Aikatsu. Hell i would even say Precure is usally more "manly" then aikatsu. |

Can someone elaborate on what Gabriella's talking about here? As far as I can recall, there were strong hints that Usagi and Mamoru had sex (or at least got to second base), but that was during the Black Moon arc. Am I forgetting something crucial from the Dark Kingdom bit? |

I don't get a lot of the changes done in Crystal myself. The other girls are sidelined a lot. The girls are originally the ones who kill the Shitennou, and Venus is the one who originally defeats Beryl, but Crystal changes all that and for little logical reason I can tell.
That's more than likely the main problem for Pretty Cure, it's very unlike what western audiences are used to. Shows with female leads usually fall into one of two categories: extremely girly, fluffy stuff like Barbie, My Little Pony, or shows that try to skew a male audience by having tomboy/tough type characters boys can relate to like Korra or Powerpuff Girls. Pretty Cure seems like one of those shows that network executives would be unable to figure out what to do with it. It's an action show, but the girls are extremely girly and wear frilly cutsey outfits and like dress up, but then beat the ever loving crap out of people. It's a marketer's worst nightmare. Aikatsu took forever to be streamed, however. People were forced to use fansubs for over 100 episodes until it was picked up. It's not in the best of positions either. Other popular shows like Jewelpet are still MIA outside the realm of fansubs. Also, Viz's Sailor Moon dub is not on TV. It was premiered on Hulu if I recall correctly. If Sailor Moon isn't on TV, what hope do other series have? -Stuart Smith |

yet they arent ready to take an risk and if they do the place it at time where no one would watch it either during school/work or in night and then complain that no one is watching it. No instead they "buy" the shit that even wasnt in japan that succsesfull and then complain yet again that no one watches it. |

Oh puh-leez. The market is already there and has been for decades. Heaps of young American girls loved Sailor Moon - even the edited version - and the unadulterated version of Card Captor Sakura is nearly legendary amongst fans. Looking even further back and you get Rose of Versailles. It is simply ludicrous to argue that shows with female protagonists aren't popular with the age group.
To throw your words back at you: cute answer but no. The audience is there in the West, this is a fact (see all the hordes of thirty-something women who fell in love with such shows as children). |

These are kids shows. The target demo for these shows are not women in their 30s who saw Sailor Moon as a kid, but the kids themselves. |

You're missing the big picture. The fact that there are such large established fanbases proves that girls will watch shows with female protagonists. True, the home video releases of such shows years or even decades after the fact are definitely aimed at adult fans on nostalgia trips. However, those fans feel in love with the shows as girls, which is why there is nostalgia in the first place. So the shows did their jobs at appealing to girls of the then-current generation. While it's probably true that the modern generation of girls wouldn't be interested in watching Sailor Moon on television, they would still watch something else with female protagonists providing it was more recent. And handled with some respect instead of being butchered like Vision of Escaflowne and Tokyo Mew Mew were. |

A friend of the genre and I stop our weekly business to laugh at SMC every...couple of weeks or more. Whenever it feels like coming out, really. It has become such a trainwreck. really need to make a drinking game out of it.
Drink every time they have no inbetweening in a scene. Drink every time the Senshi get knocked down without doing anything. Drink every time the characters are hilariously off model. I think the greatest thing about the show is it is letting us know what really made the old show work. Mr. Sato would later go on to direct some of the best Mahou Shoujo to ever air: Doremi, Princess Tutu, and Futago Hime. Even that one show about gondolas on Mars. All the shows he directs come through with strong, distinct characters - the thing most people like about the original Sailor Moon. |

How big is the international market for Japanese movies? Americans watch little foreign content of any kind. I don't see any special discrimination against anime. If anything, it has become much more available in the West through services like Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix than it was even a decade ago. Japanese cinema has experienced no such upsurge in interest that I see. |
