I got idea for a thread after looking up Mayuri on the Bleach Wikia site (who says he's one). What is your thought on mad scientists in anime? I think this is a motif/idea that could been inspired from the cheesy Western stuff of yesteryear (Frankenstein really immortalized it). I enjoy these motifs because I have a thing for old cheesy sci-fi/horror films at times.

An awsome mad scientist would be Dr.Gero in Dragonball, Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT. Well I'm pretty sure he is a mad scientist because he created Androids 13, 14 and 15 and I believe 17 and 18. He's created super crazy androids that are able to destroy the whole planet earth and his androids are smart enough to control them selfs which is pretty cool.

Yes. His pursuit was certainly a scientific one, he's a smart guy, and there's noooo arguing that he was off his rocker. Creepazoid.

Speaking of the cliche, the first character that leaps to my mind is good old Dr. Franken Stein from Soul Eater. He has a hilarious fascination with dissection. Even endangered species and his own fighting partners are fair game.

"Bad news, I switched your left and right big toes while you were sleeping."

"WHAT?!"

"Just kidding!" Laughing

On a more serious note, you don't get much more "mad scientist" than Shou Tucker. Running down his arc in FMA is like watching a genius devolve...slowly. So unbelievably creepy.

You don't need to look further than Go(d) Nagai's works to find one of the most influential scientific madman in anime history: Dr. Hell(aka Dr. Demon in the Americanized Tranzor Z)

His madness can be seen from his three henchmen created by him in the 1972 anime and manga of Mazinger Z:

Baron Ashura: Hell puts together the halves of two mummies (male and female) to create his first servant.

Count Blocken: Blocken is a cyborg, a general (probably a Nazi one) brought back to life by Hell after being decapitated in a car accident.

Viscount Pigman: Again, another cyborg created by Dr. Hell, putting together the body of a large tribal warrior and the upper body of a pygmy sorcerer instead of the head.

And Dr. Hell plans to rule the world along with these three freak-shows? Oh my. Wink

Dr. Hell is pretty awesome. I have to wonder if that's his real name though. Oh well, I suppose that when you look like this, there's no point in trying to be inconspicuous.

Shou Tucker is probably the worst anime Mad Scientist that I've come across. And the fact that he'd did what he did TWICE! And no one caught on the first time around. Yucky!

But, not all Mad Scientists are bad...some are just strange and come across as a possible child molester...such as Icchan of Angelic Layer.

Ah, Dom beat me to the punch! Anime hyper Yeah, they don't get much crazier than Dr. Hell! Anime hyper It brings to mind a 4koma I saw once from an SRW doujinshi where Mineva Zabi is being scared to death by the appearance of Hell's Generals and when Haman goes to complain, Hell surprises her with a two headed Zaku! Anime hyper

Can't really think of anyone else though. :\

What about Gates from Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid? That guy would kill of at least one underling an episode for something minor. He was just a tad freaky.

I always liked Lloyd Asplund from Code Geas. Not sure if he's flat out crazy but if not he's definitely on the way.

My favorite mad scientist right now is Fran from Franken Fran, a manga which has become a personal favorite with it’s excellent mix of extreme gore and old school EC comics Tales From the Crypt type stories. What I like most about Fran is, she always has the best of intentions and is generally a good person. However her twisted perspective on things allows her to carry out some pretty horrific experiments. To someone who didn’t know any better she could seem pretty evil. Despite what she is capable of, she is a very likable character. I really wish this manga got more love and an American release, that would rule. Mad scientists in general have always been a favorite archetype of mine, from the truly mad to the completely amoral.
