Great review! I must admit, this show is perhaps the cutest I've ever seen.

At first I thought that this show was toddlercon. I confess to watching the first episode so that I could get some new material about how Anime has jumped yet another shark in terms of stretching cute too far. But the first episode confused me. It contained all the horrible cliches that plague Shows Like This. And yet, it had some surprisingly good moments. The bit about the tree, and just the innocent and excited curiosity that the children have, really stood out. The episode didn't seem like it was completely pandering to the Otaku-Lolicon crowd. It didn't come across as being solely for sick guys to get off on, which is what I initially thought it would be.

Is it the show for me? Hell no. But it isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If there were fewer cliches I might have - GASP - watched the second episode. And not because I wanted to make fun of it some more, but because I (kind of) enjoyed the first episode. Hells bells, I actually went there.

Yikes.

^^Hells bells, don't just go there, watch it now.

If anything, watch it for the 2nd ED song because it is probably one of the best sci-fi anime love letters ever.

Seconded. It is hilarious, too. I'm surprised that second ED didn't get spotlighted in the review since it is so clever.

I started watching this show with extreme reservations, and ended up recalling funny stuff from my own childhood. It is very cute and gentle, not perverted at all.

I knew I was in for a treat after reading that. Cool

Carlos pretty much nailed it right on the head. In a world of cute gone wrong, Hanamaru isn't trying to be gimmicky or sell anything, it just IS, and that's exactly why people like it. A good friend of mine mentioned to me how believable he thought the little kids were. They're not 5 going on 30 but they don't have Down syndrome either. They're naturally curious and prone to misinterpreting information before they get it right.

And yeah... Yamamoto's perfect. We get it. Ugh.

Okay, having reviewed these comments, I'm pretty much sold. I love cute stuff (Chi's Sweet Home fan here) and now, being reassured it's not lolicon fodder, I absolutely must check this title out. I'm hoping it's something I can share with my friends' 6- and 8-year-old young 'uns (a la Chi).

Sorry to disappoint all the alarmist prudes

The fact that I disapprove of sexualizing little kids does not make me a prude. The fact that I observed anime's frequent habit of doing this and expected this was probably a continuation of that trend does not make me alarmist. I guess it turns out that against all odds, people who assumed the worst were wrong. That's fine and you can just say so. No need to resort to name calling.

I remember being confused that people were calling this pedo bait before it aired. The focus of people when looking at season previews appears to be 'look for the sexualisation so I can dismiss it'.

I saw the CG panda-dance thing, and that alone was adorable. I'll be sure to check this out.

It sounds like this show went exactly the way I expected it to (sounds like Azumanga Daioh but with toddlers?). It still doesn't interest me, but good on Gainax for bucking the bad-cute trend.

it would not be surprising if the show's charming qualities led to an outpouring of merchandise anyway.

Indeed. The cast of this show seems almost desinged for Gashophon.

Yeah, this anime has been the surprise of the season for me. I didn't think it would be nearly as good as it was.

The description reminds me a little of Bottle Fairy. That was a pretty cute series.

This isn't the sort of thing I'd be interested in anyway, but I just can't take the character seriously when they don't even look like human beings.

I think I've just grown some sort of aversion to anything that seems like it's trying too hard to be cute.
