Recently, the latest issue of Shonen Jump arrived (yes, I realize many people here have outgrown this magazine) I turn to the end expecting to find more information on Toriko. While I find my information, instead of this title actually being serialized (as previosly announced) I find they are only doing a 3 month preview for it . I also find that Yu-Gi-Oh! GX will no longer be serialized in the magazine (unlike Hikaru no Go, this series only has 8 volumes out in Japan...). Why did Viz Media initially make it sound like they are serializing Toriko if they are simply previewing it!?!? Ugh, this is as annoying as when they announced that they were only seriazling the first volume of Gin Tama in Shonen Jump. Sorry, I apoligize for the rant. Will anything be replacing Yu-gi-oh! GX? Will the promised serialization of Baku-man also be a preview? What are your thought on the American edition of Shonen Jump? If you have read through this message, thank you.

They never announced they'd be serializing it. In fact they said it would only be a 3 issue preview in the "Next Month" section of the January issue.

Bakuman is 100% confirmed to be serialized in the magazine.

That's too bad. I've already read the scanlations (DN fan after all).

The newest issue says next month will be the last chapter of Tegami Bachi in the magazine. I like it, but I don't know if I'd buy it when if leaves the magazine. I actually enjoy Ultimo more, which I didn't think would be the case at first. Anyway, I don't know why they're taking Tegami out. I mean, they already got rid of the dead weight (Yugioh GX and YuYu Hakusho), so there was already plenty of page space for Bakuman.
Toriko was pretty interesting. And next issue they're also having a "showcase" chapter of Gintama, like they've done in the past with other series.

I haven't gotten my issue yet, so I'm shocked and disappointed to hear that it'll be taking out Tegami Bachi. I was really liking that one and it'll be a while before I get to ordering the volumes.

Tegami Bachi was annoying with being overdramatic and trying to be sad all the time. But it was the beginning of the story so it's possible it could get better over time. If they're taking it out before I really even care for the series then I definitely won't be buying it. Unless the Feb and March chapters totally change my opinion.
I agree though - With 2 series out (Personally I liked YYH) what's the point of taking Tegami Bachi out? There would be room for Bakuman without doing that. One second Viz does something great with SJ (licensing Ultimo quickly, speeding up One Piece) and the next they do something dumb and unnecessary.

I got my issue and yeah, I agree. There's no reason to take anything out at this point really, the magazine's already a lot slimmer than it was years ago.
Off topic, I was surprised - I'm actually liking Toriko so far, even if I've only read that one chapter they give us.

Physically yes. One of the largest issues, for example let's say April '04, is 384 pages. January '10 is 408. The magazine is just thinner now - there's not less content.
You should see the difference in the March '05 issue to the April '05. April has 8 more pages but is almost half the size.

Hmm, I never noticed the actual page counts, just noticed how much slimmer the were physically, as you said. That's strange though, how'd they manage that? Change the paper or something?

Just got the new issue. Bakuman is gonna be another 3-issue preview, which is disappointing. I was looking forward to it being in the magazine. Now it makes even less sense that they took out Tegami Bachi. There's only 4 regular series now.
And the next showcase chapter will be from D.Gray-man. I wonder if they're using all these showcase chapters as a sort of test to decide what series to put into the magazine.

SJ usually only runs new series for a preview period, it's not that unexpected. They've been doing so since they started. They did the same thing with Shojo Beat- the only titles they've run to completion in SJ have been YuYuHakusho and Sandland, jumping ahead like OP or Naruto or in Bleach's case, adding to to the magazine after it had caught up to the Japanese release. It mostly acts as an advertisement for their graphic novel line, and is pretty cheaply priced, so I don't mind too much.
I also find it keeps things fresh [allowing new series to take the place of less popular older ones], and lets them give exposure to more series then they could otherwise.

Because I've read over 85 chapters of Toriko, I can honestly say its an exceptional and actually original series. Finally, a series without excessive drama, annoying characters and characters that never did anything worthwhile and without fanservice.
100% shonen action, they way it should be. Except this time, the cast are well in the early 30's (some characters are even much, much older) so its refreashing to have an older cast of characters for once.
Needless to say, I have nothing bad to say about this series and look forward to supporting Viz Media and telling my friends about this series.
Bakuman is pure gold, which is surprizingly because I can't stand DN at all. Bakuman is realistic and is serious, but not constantly serious without any humor at all. I can say its well worth the buy, despite the author's last work.

It would be cool if Viz included some of its SJA series on SJ.
Hunter X Hunter (Since there is no YYH and since HXH is so slow pacing it could work, even with 1 chapter per month)
Then SJ would look like this:
-ONE PIECE 4 chapters, since the chapters Oda has been doing lately are like 15 pages long it would only take 60 pages
-BLEACH 3 chapters
-NARUTO 3 chapters, sometimes 4
-ULTIMO 1 chapter
-CLAYMORE 1 chapter
-New Prince of Tennis Basically follow how it is released in Japan, sometimes 2 chapters are released, sometimes 3, but the chapters are pretty short, sometimes 10 pages long IIRC
D-Gray Men 1 chapter (remember its now monthly in Japan)
HUNTER X HUNTER 1 chapter
Jaguar I know it wouldn´t be a BIG seller but the 9-page chapters could really fill the magazine.
Obviously some of the SJA mangas would have to be censored, but the graphic novels could be left uncensored. And yeah I know there is NO way this is gonna happen... But still one can only dream..
