I have been wondering what people think is the most controversial scene they've seen in a (non-hentai) anime.

The scene that I found most controversial was in episode 32 of Blood+ where spoiler[ the villain Diva rapes/kills Riku, the protagonist's adopted little brother ]

As far as what I think is controversial, I really think that's open to interpretation so i'm curious what other people think is a controversial scene. I found that particular scene to be more than a little cringe-worthy, and feel like they shouldn't have done it because it dragged down the show a bit for me.

Are you only looking for controversy along the lines of "how did this get past the censors?"

Things like the Endless Eight, or episode 25/26 of NGE weren't particularly shocking, but they certainly stirred up some controversy in the community.

The OP needs to edit the original post to express his/her own opinion and define what, exactly, is meant by "controversial." Otherwise this thread is in danger of being locked.

Many scenes in Gundam in which Char was involved are.

considered big enemies - whilst he also had to make uses of them
at that time.]

More recently, the part in Code Geass R2 where spoiler[Lelouch facing Emperor
Britannia, and later, discover that Marinne - his mother - is not so good at
all. What did he do at the end, why could/did he do so ? Was Britannia &
Marinne wrong ?]

You need to put the series name outside the spoiler tags if you want people to risk reading it.

If this has to do with objectionable content, I'd say Mnemosyne does enough at pushing the envelope at points considering it was made for AT-X's 10th anniversary. Moments featuring sadomasochism, an orgy, oral sex and rape pushed the title's content to near-hentai levels in several of Mnemosyne's episodes.

Why not start a thread on it then if you want to know? You'll get a lot more thoughtful answers than you might expect. There have been a lot of great posts online that have academically analyzed that scene in the same way an english student might academically analyze Nabakov's "Lolita". Laughing

Because

1. I didn't think it a big enough of a deal to start a thread over.

2. I haven't found anything academic looking that analyzes the scene on any searches I've done on the web. Just a few reviews that mention the scene briefly but don't dwell on it at all...

Including one from Roger Ebert who says, "This sort of sudden sexual violence is typical of both anime and Japanese comic books."

Oi...

First off, that is one of the very few just drop dead lazy things Ebert has ever said to interpret a movie scene.

That's too bad. Carl Horn posted a lot of good stuff on usenet back in the day and discussion threads on this scene took up many pages of good posts.

Usenet? Man, I'm dated. Gotta get back to 2010...

It actually is a topic that will guarantee you a lot of posts. Unfortunately since most of the "old guard" anime veterans of yore don't hang around as much online today, you'll just get the usual "WTF" posts from the under 25 set.

As for me, yes I'm "older" than most in here, but way too dumb an old guy to articulate what better posters have said about it. Laughing
