Hi everyone...long-time lurker, but post fairly seldom:
I had a question about the new Dr. Slump translations from VIZ. I bought the first volume recently and don't mind most of the changes form the original Japanese tankoubon. (For instance, raise your hand if you know who Alain Delon is... ) Onr thing did get me, though...in Story two, there were two artwork edits that seemed severe across two pages. On one, Senbee and Aoi are going to a movie. Originally, the movie poster that Senbee points out is to "Ultraman vs. Ultra Seven" with a depiction of the two sentai heroes making faces at each other. It (and a subsequent shot of the movie screen) have been changed so that now the two look like Batman or cats or something (probably the latter, as they are now called "Nekotora" and "Nekotora 7")
The other edit was after a sequence where Arale sends a baseball on a super-sonic flight. The ball, in the original tankoubon, lands in a highly stereotypical version of Papua New Guinea or Africa, where it has beaned one highly stereotypical black aborigine on the head. Im the VIZ version, both he and his companion in the frame have been altered completely (the hair has been erased from the top of the head and replaced with a horn, the ears have been given points, their mouths have been thinned and given fangs and the pigment has been removed). Not that I'm complaining about the changes entirely on this second edit (I have to admit that I cringe a little every time I see that frame in the tankoubon) but was it done by Toriyama himself, or did VIZ go and make the changes themselves?

Really? :/ Aw, I was looking forward to this series coming to the states ever since I finished Dragon Ball. I love Toriyama, he has such a weird sense of humor.
