Now if only they'd make a second series - although I'm not holding my breath!

The Anime series was quite good and highly enjoyable, especially those wacky expressions and the way the humour and drama were seamlessly integrated. I'd love to see a second season but the first season sold poorly and with the Manga ending there's no need to boost sales anymore. Which means the chances of getting a second season is zip. So sad.

Man every time an article on this series comes up its always just serves as a stinging reminder that I'm never gonna see the ending...

Yeah, those thriller types of anime never sell in Japan. It averaged about 1.2k sales per volume, which was one of the worst of its season.

At the very least, i'm hoping a company will license the manga for english at some point. I'd really like to buy the volumes.

One way or another, I'd love to know how this story ends. I intend to buy the series when it comes out here in the US, too. It was one of my favorite series for the season it came out. It's a shame it didn't do better financially, but I guess that's just the way things are.

La, la, lalala, lalala lalala la la
Def. one of my favorite series of 2011, and I too intend to buy the blu-ray release. Utao is one of the most adorable anime girls ever, largely due to the facial expressions.
I hope the manga gets brought over someday, if we can't have a second season of anime I at least want to read the ending.

Hopefully, this will be the final impetus that will push that decision for a second season over the edge. It would be great to see how the rest of the story ends, and now that there is a concrete ending to work with, you don't have to worry about some questionable anime-original sequel or finale.

Like someone said earlier, motivation to make a second season is gone once a manga ends. If the DVD/BDs don't sell, then all you are left with is advertising the original source material.. and if the original source material is over, you're not going to make much money out of doing that. Remember, the funding for these series come from the publishers who own the rights to the manga.. if the manga is no longer in their manga magazine, theres no point to advertise it. Especially when that publisher would have many other manga with more potential for growth if they got anime adaptions.

I have it pre-ordered; it was my favorite that year. dtm42 nailed it when he mentioned the seamless blend of humor and drama; I really don't care for a lot of anime that tries to blend the two, probably because it is frequently done so poorly.
Crossing my fingers for a sequel, but not with much hope. It would be great if we could at least get the manga here.

Don't know about chapters, but it's gonna end at 12 volumes. The show got to the 8th.

That just makes things even more frustrating if it got as far as 2/3 of the way through. They could finish the whole thing with a few OAVs.
There is one other reason than the manga that they'd want to push a second season: merchandise. Unfortunately what was already made for the anime didn't exactly fly out of stores. A Kukuri and an Utao figure released last year are still pretty easy to find, some with a really steep discount. Though, in their defense they were pretty expensive items, small things like straps, towels, cushions, bags, shirts and whatnot sold well enough.
