I've always been a fan of science fiction, but I'm an even bigger fan of science fiction becoming science reality. A few animes come to mind as potential candidates -- I'd like to hear people's thoughts on any more.

The first and most standout example in my mind is Ghost in the Shell. Cyborgs and artificial intelligence are a long way off, but the low-level technology present in the GitS world seems like it's starting to become reality. Human beings having their body parts replaced with artificial technology that goes beyond a simple prosthetic seems closer every day, for example:

http://www.livescience.com/humanbiology/050317_brain_interface.html

I've read that some doctors are also working on implanting blind people with CCDs that are wired to their brains and let them "see" albeit in a 16 pixel black and white sense. I can only imagine the possibilities for the brain controlling artificial limbs, or even an external computer.

This of course brought to mind Texhnolyze where a Texnholyzed person's artificial limb gives them a heads up display, projected directly into their field of vision.

And then there's the world of mechs, this is great:

http://www.americanantigravity.com/carlos-owens.shtml

I think some of the best portrayals of how mechs could be used in real life come from Patlabor and Gasaraki, though I'm sure there are others. I like the premise of Patlabor's mechs being construction, it really seems to make the most sense. Construction sites (especially the Babylon Project in Patlabor) would be nearly impossible to navigate with wheeled vehicles. Patlabor really takes the idea of 2 legged mechs running around and deals with it in a very realistic way. Gasaraki is the same way (even though a supernatural element is thrown in). Why would mechs ever be used in warfare? They answer this question by applying mechs to urban warfare -- pretty cool answer if you ask me. Robotics seems to be getting more advanced every day!

And my final observation has to be Planetes. I love the manga, and what I've seen of the anime. This show treats space exploration in a very realistic way and expounds upon the problems people in space will and are facing today (weightlessnes, profitability, sustainability, etc.) The problems with junk falling off the space shuttle in the past few days, along with the fate of the international space station really brought Planetes to mind. I only hope I can live to see a manned mission to Jupiter!

I hit on a girl and she hit me with a big wooden hammer once. Does that count?

Are you looking for others? If so, I suggest Gunslinger Girl. Didn't really get to read your post, I'll have a better answer later...

Yup, other suggestions are what I'm looking for, and if you could, tell why you recommend it or how it's becoming real. Thanks! Smile

I think you have a good point shattercone, as technology is becoming more minaturized (portable) and with the current revolution in wireless networking technology a lot of what we see in anime is much closer to reality than ever before.

I've seen similar studies to your CCD idea for blind people for the deaf as well with further advances in hearing implants being directly wired to the brain.

Somewhat on the down side of things... I could see computer viruses evolving to the state of near sentience as in Lain... the conscience part is lacking (hopefully will continue to lack) but some of the viruses on the web seem to live in the ether of the world wide web.

As for mechs: I could envision stuff more on the lines of some of the classic Bubblegum Crisis genre as lightweight semi-intelligent body armor for police or soldiers. Less militant options would be to integrate remote sensing technology into space suits like laser ranging equipment or spectrometers for telling chemistry of your surrounding environment. Small drill bits or other access tools for geology or rescue jobs could also be wired into a smart-suit enhancing the wearer's abilities.

I think you bring up a good dicussion here... in fact it would be neat to take a tally of technological things that we note from certain futuristic anime/manga sources just to see how prevalent they are becoming... (Forget trying to deny you're otaku... hee hee)

I think Iv'e seen on the discovery channel that they already did that with a man in Paris. I'm not sure if it was a complete success, but he was able to "see" in black in white for several months. I just hope that things don't become like Blue Gender, crappy anime anyway, or like Gundam, where practucally entire army's are mechs, but there are some robots that are being used by the Army, such as bombs defusers, smart spy planes, and of course, all-terrain remote controled mini-attack vehicles, (and I mean as big as a r.c. car). Maybe we're closer to those days then you actually think.

And anime I see becoming a reality is Gund--never mind.

I don't really have any new anime to add, but I was also thinking a while back that Ghost in the Shell isn't that far off. The technology is very freaky at times (the camouflage, not the Tachikomas) but it isn't like the gadgets you see in Totally Spies. (Invisibility potion, for instance.) I can certainly see the car designs becoming a reality. Now the Cyber brain thing I'm split half and half on. It just seems so bizarre and impossible. But I know that people flying to the moon seemed impossible 200 years ago. Another concept that may have a chance of happening is bounty hunting, like in Cowboy Bebop. If the population keeps growing and humans expand to other areas, the police are going to need some help.
Ummm...gee a strange thought just occured to me. If we could y'know live online maybe we wouldn't have to worry about living space?! Kinda like a permanent .hack stuation...?
Like a few centuries down the road maybe, not exactly within 50 years.

yeah, but eating would be kind of a problem...

And as for some of the technology in GitS becoming reality, I wouldn't really trust it, personally. I don't know, I guess that I only really trust machines that have been proven to work well (such as cars, for an example. I get in one every day, but I doubt that if the car was invented in my lifetime, I wouldn't go in one until about 20 years after the initial invention)

Bathroom breaks would be... interesting... Shocked

./Hack is definitely a possibility, at least a MMORPG with virtual reality (e.g. a head's up display, where you immerse yourself completely in the gameworld). A quick search on google turned this up:

http://www.microopticalcorp.com/Products/HomePage.html

Just add something like a rumble-pack or "shock-pack" for sensory output, and you've got yourself a winner! Wink

Well, maybe we wouldn't need to eat or do any of that. I'm not sure if whether I'm being serious myself... Shocked

Think about this and look at this site. Japan now has robotic receptionists. Yes, female ones. Soon, we will all be able to get a chobit Laughing

Interesting -- I liked this in particular:
Quote:
"In Western countries, humanoid robots are still not very accepted, but they are in Japan," said Norihiro Hagita, director of the ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories in Keihanna Science City near Kyoto. "One reason is religion. In Japanese (Shinto) religion, we believe that all things have gods within them. But in Western countries, most people believe in only one God. For us, however, a robot can have an energy all its own."

From this article, it seems like the Japanese will be the forerunners in putting the robot into the home. Something like Persocoms from Chobits wouldn't be so far fetched. I wonder how the rest of the world would react to super-cute Japanese robots?

Shattercone, I suppose which half of the rest of the world you mean???

I think men will like it, and women will be offended, generally speaking.

I would prefer the laptop size, like Sumomo. At least that way, no one could claim you are having sex with it Wink
