I'm sure it's full of shortcuts being gonzo and all, and I'm against animal abuse, but I might check out the first episode; it sounds potentially interesting.

Well, it's Gonzo's first major anime since Last Exile Fam, which was over a year ago. They're probably still hurting a bit from their near-bankrupcy encounter a few years ago. Plus many of their animators left or were laid off and formed other studios, like David Production and Studio Gokumi.
I'm not expecting much from this show, but at least Gonzo's back in the game somewhat.
