Right now as an unemployed highschool student with money strict parents its hard for me to get quality anime. The only anime that i get a chance to get are the really popular ones and fansubs online........and its a pain to download with my shitty computer.

Isn't it supposed to be expensive?
Anyway, I don't download fansubs or anything, get my allowance, spend ALL of it on anime
I mean, I literally don't spend money on anything else unless my mom pays for it
So it depends... while there are people that really can't afford ANYTHING, some times the case might just be that they're not willing to cut into other aspects of their life to spend on this hobby...
but I dunno

I am in the exact same position as you! Believe me. Except I have to deal with the fact that my four member family is living in a two bedroom apartment without cable. I try to refrain from downloading anime, not just because it is imorral but also because my techy dad says that it is full of bugs. When I had cable, it was okay because I could watch the popular stuff (I mostly only watched InuYasha and Witch Hunter Robin), but beeing in Canada, there was not much to choose from. Now that I don't have cable, all that I have is a Vampire Princess Miyu DVD that I bought at Anime North a few months ago and anything my friends happen to tape.
I wish that you # 1 didn't need a credit card to rent anime at The Comic Book Shoppe and # 2 had anime for rent at Blockbuster... . I still wish that it wasn't so much to buy, though. But the sun shall rise again!

I want to spend my money on something that last, like a video game, the dvds are to short 3-4 episodes doesn't cut it for me. I do buy anime dvds only when there is no good games out.

You wanna talk expensive? You try to make a show-quality car for a client with a strict budget that would be suitable for a backyard mechanic. Or you try to make a reasonable track car without cutting corners.

I feel your pain. I remember what it was like to have no spending money at that age.
Here are some ideas:
For your birthday, ask your relatives for any movies or OVA's you might be interested in. Or perhaps gift certificates to your local rental store (Blockbuster, for instance, carries most of the major anime movies now and maybe even some series depending on the size of your branch).
For your major holiday, depending on how much your parents and/or grandparents spend, ask for series in boxed sets (alot are under $100 U.S. now). I don't know what your cable/satellite or parental finance situation is, but you could also ask your parents to forego a present and buy you a year's worth of cable/satellite instead if your local company carries anime you're interested in.
You could also look into whether there's an anime club in your area - or start one yourself and pool resources with others in your situation so that you all see more than you could alone.
Finally, think about whether you have an animation-friendly older sibling or cousin who does have rental money and who you could interest in watching an anime movie or two with you. You might be surprised if you ask - alot of people in their mid-thirties and younger grew up with The Simpsons and Disney, after all. (And if it works, return the favor once you do have money).
Hope that helps.

Guess you won't be buying any DVDs, then.
I'm in the same boat as a lot of you. I'm in my second year of college and I just got laid off from my job, so I have no money. I am so far behind on a lot of series; I have a lot of Vol. 1 DVDs but not the rest. FUNimation's done with Spiral and all I have is Vol. 1 w/box. It sucks. The other day, I'm looking for something to watch and the best thing I could find was Outlaw Star. I have a bunch of DVDs, but they get old after a while. I hate going on the internet and seeing people talk about all the new anime that's out (like Genshiken, which I want BAAAD) and how great all the new dubs are, but I haven't seen any of the stuff. I do have cable, however, so I'm able to check out Cartoon Network and Anime Network on Demand, so I'm not as bad as some of you without cable. The only reason I have all the current GANTZ discs is because my friend's been buying them, watching them at his place, and giving them to me (now I have to pay him back). Hopefully Gamestop or Wegmans calls to hire me.

Anime is definitely too expensive. Some series, like Inu Yasha, are just way too much of an investment.
I think about what else I could spend my money on. I could get more and better hours of entertainment from buying a computer game, some new clothes, or going to a concert or event. Then i think about the few hours I'd spend watching an anime that may turn out to be crappy and is practically guaranteed to have a stupid ending.

Yes anime is expensive, and it's that way because it is a luxury.

Well, jobs are a great way to get spending money.
Now that I'm out of college and on a salary, I can finally afford to buy those DVDs on my own.

I don't think so, but DVDs, CDs, and books are my hobbies and what I choose to spend my money on. I also have a job to fund it and and only a few bills (Health Insurrance, cable modem, college tuition) to pay.
