Right, so I haven't watched much Naruto, only the first 24 episodes or so. Amazon.com is having a sale on the Uncut box sets these days, so I figured I'd order them seeing as I prefer to watch stuff on my TV rather than on my PC. I know I can watch them on my PS3 and whatever, but I want the DVDs.

The DVDs are divided as such:

Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 1 Vol. 1 (1-25)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 1 Vol. 2 (26-52)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 2 Vol. 1 (53-78)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 2 Vol. 2 (79-107)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 3 Vol. 1 (108-135)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 3 Vol. 2 (136-163)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 4 Vol. 1 (164-191)
Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 4 Vol. 2. (192-220)

Now, I've read that the manga ends after episode 135 - "The Promise That Could Not Be Kept" / "Mamorenakatta Yakusoku". Is this true?
If so, everything up to Season 3 Vol. 1 would be enough, so I wouldn't have to buy Season 3 Vol. 2 and Season 4 Vol. 1&2, which would be preferred, even if they're on sale.

Would anyone care to confirm this?

Everything that happens after Naruto returns to Konohagakure at the end of the Sasuke Retrieval Arc is filler. EVERYTHING.

'Naruto: Shippuden' is what the series is called after a time skip. At that point there are new, non-filler episodes.

Personally, I don't see the point in owning (or watching) several seasons of filler and didn't bother buying anything after Box Set 10 (from the previous version) which ends, happily, right at the ending of the last non-filler arc.

There's about a chapter's worth of manga material that was spread out among the filler episodes, but there's nothing important that you can't pick up on while you're watching Shippuden. There are a few filler episodes that are worth watching, but unless you're a completist I wouldn't buy those 3 sets just for them.

Yes. You can, IMO, blow off everything that happens after that and move on to Naruto: Shippuden unless, as braves mentioned, you're a completionist.

yeah, unfortunately after the retrial ark it's all filler until Shipoden.

And there is only a handful of filler worth watching, so don't bother with 4.
