You should read the rules so others wouldn't have to tell you. To the topic I would say it depends on what kind of anime you like.

Fruits Basket is actually a "reverse harem" series - one girl, lots of guys, with the gimmick in this case being that all the guys come from a family whose members are cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese Zodiac whenever they're embraced by a member of the opposite sex. Very funny, but also at times very poignant, too. An excellent series that also has one of the better English dubs out there.

It's a shoujo anime meaning it's made with girls in mind. As a guy I thought is was good, humorous, and worth watching, but nothing too outstanding and it lacks a solid conclusion.

Well, there are roughly 10 more volumes of manga out between TokyoPop releases (Vol. 12 just released) and scanslations (up to Ch 107, end of Vol. 18 at the moment) to continue the story, so I don't fault the anime conclusion (which occurs in Vol. 6, though some material from voumes 7-8 is in episodes 20-23) that much. . .after all, it could have been worse. Personally, I would recommend Fruits Basket, because of its cuteness, humor, and emotional power. Even though I'm a guy, it's in my top 15 anime somewhere. However, if you enjoy harem shows like Love Hina/Girls Bravo/Ichigo 100%/Futakoi/Sister Princess and want to see panty shots, hot girls, girls in states of undress, and all that stuff, Fruits Basket may be a disappointment. However, if you're looking to build a good collection, the Fruits Basket DVDs are a great deal, at 4 DVDs, 26 episodes and tons of extras for around $70. |

Yes, it's continued in the manga I know, still doesn't change the fact the anime leaves some loose ends though for those who aren't into manga. All of which aren't that important to the story at hand in the series however, it would have been nice to get more closeure. I do read a little manga myself, but I don't really feel like picking up the manga to see the spoiler[last couple members of the zodiac or the ultimate origin of the wierd family curse, however.] Maybe, once I'm through with a few other series I'm reading.

It's been pointed out by someone more knowledgeable than I that one purpose, if not THE purpose of producing anime shows is to drive up popularity for the manga. That way, when the anime ends after 13, 26, 39, 52 episodes, people run out and buy the manga, thinking, "I have to know how this ends!" Therefore, it's logical to end an anime at a halfway point, so that there's more time for people to buy the later manga volumes. I know this worked on me with Love Hina, anyway, though I started by buying 13-14, then 10-12, then 1-9. (Now I limit my manga purchases to series that don't have anime versions, like Alice 19th, Imadoki, Doubt!!, etc.)
Maybe this is why I've been attracted to shows that either A) are not based on a manga, or (B) deviate wildly from their origins. A) would include dating-sim based shows, as well as stuff like Escaflowne, Mai Hime/Otome where the manga is an alternate adaptation of the story. B) would include Chrno Crusade, Scrapped Princess, and Full Metal Alchemist, among others. At least I know that if it's not based on a long-running manga, there's a better chance of a complete, satisfying ending. |

Wow. I personally think there's alot more than that. There's the main issues of whether the curse is going to be broken and who Tohru's going to end up with spoiler[and we've been getting subtle hints that her triangle is very likely to turn into a square before the end once Momiji finally goes through his changes]. And that's without the subplot questions like whether Ayame is ever going to connect with Yuki, Hatori is ever going to fall in love again, or whether Momiji is going to find the acceptance he didn't get from his mother from his little sister Momo (who according to the preview is going to show up again in vol. 13). And there's alot more that I won't get into because it wasn't even touched upon in the anime. As for the anime, I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a 50/50 mix of comedy and drama - although I'd warn that it's a relationship-based series, so it's not for action fans who don't like stories that are largely based on people discussing their feelings. |

I'll tell you something.......
In many of my pervious posts on this site i asked for anime recomendations that were not romantic. I watched Air (TV) and that changed my oppinion on that genra of shows. After that, the 2nd show i wanted to watch was...yes, Fruits Baskets. Imeditly after watching it ( i barrowed the show froma friend of mine who recomended it to me earlier on, but due to my narrow mindedness i refused to watch it), i promtly went out and bought the full series for myself and have watched it 2 times (after seeing it the 1st time) in full. I would recomend this to to any who asks about it it. In short, I belive that yes it would be to your benifit to get this series. The reason for me saying this is( based on my experience) you will probly want to watch it again prehaps back to back viewing or prehaps at a later date. Either way I would think buying it would be to your benifit. But, this is just my oppinion, it is for you to decide. If you don't like shows with hardly any fight seans in them ( action or adventure type) I would still recomend this. I have a few laughs ever episode i watched (26 in full) some were funnier then others, but it has a great sence of humor tied into it. If you have ever seen Full Metal Panic Fumuffu, and liked it, I would HIGHLY say buy this. |
