Seems like Vertical, the publisher's of Osamu Tezuka's Buddha, already have their next release from the God of Manga in the works. This time it's a massive, 800-page edition of Tezuka's Ode to Kirihito. From the somewhat vague description from Publisher's Weekly, Ode follows a doctor in his attempts to cure a disease that turns humans into beast-like creatures. As expected, the story will be heavy on themes such as social injustice and humanist ideals seen in Buddha and Phoenix. Apparently Kirihito is Japanese for Christ. Whether the manga will feature Christian ideology or if the title is merely a reference to Christ's well know compassion isn't clear. Comes out in December, and I personally can't wait. |

I don't know why they have to smack it all into an 800 page volume. I can only handle so much Tezuka at once. That sh*t is deep, hurts my head sometimes.

Heh...personally I'm glad to get it all in one big package. People bitch about cost, but if they'd actually take the time to think it would dawn that large collections are usually a good deal. Sexy Voice was 400 pages AND oversized for the price of two normal, 200-page trades. Each volume of Buddha costs $25 with about 400 pages, meaning for only five bucks you get the bonus of a hardcover; another good deal. I'm guessing this is going to run about $40 bucks. I know some people are afraid to lay down that much money on something and would rather read a single volume to see if it's good, but seriously, it's Tezuka. He's called the god of freakin' manga for a reason: he can REALLY write good. As for the "his art sux" argument, I stopped trying to get those people into his stuff a long time ago.

From what I've seen in my knowledge of all things Tezuka, this was his last big success before his tragic passing in 1989. He used some historical facts involving his ancestor in the story.
Now, if only they would release an english translationg of Jungle Emperor Leo.......then I could die happy. |

Since they're using a new cover and it's cheaper, I'm wondering if the size is also smaller than the HC? I guess we will have to wait and see. I have the first 4 volume of Buddha in HC format which is excellent and i was thinking of selling them to get the softcover version because it's cheaper, but if they cut corners, then I rather stick with the nice HC format for 16 off amazon. |
