Even though this nowhere near a guarantee he'll be up for the actual award, this is pretty great news and long overdue. Hisaishi is one of the best composers working in film, and it would fantastic to see him get some mainstream recognition.

Don't think he'll get nominated, but who knows? Although, I do think he deserved one for his score for Spirited Away, which was beautifully done and among the best around (stiff competition in 2001--especially for a foreign/anime film--but still…).

114 works? Bloody hell. Mind you, it's even harder to judge a soundtrack most of the time than it is its corresponding film... would be nice for Joe to get some recognition though, his stuff is far more affective and has a much stronger authorial voice than most Hollywood composers.

To be fair, most people couldn't name composers.

I am surprised that no one mentioned his work on Princess Mononoke. That film to me has by far the best musical score Hisaishi made for Ghibli films.

I do hope he gets actually nominated, as Hisaishi is one of the most brilliant composers in any field. Despite the fact that the Oscars are essentially a giant, self-congratulatory popularity contest, it would be cool seeing a mainstream American establishment give props to an anime composer.

Wow this is just anime's year for Oscar Buzz, even if none get the nomination I find the publicity quite nice.

Pretty much any Awards, even the ones in Tokyo.
