Okay so my friend accidently gave away that spoiler[Goda dies]. I've only seen a few episodes here and there and haven't even finished the first season yet. Please, no more spoilers but is that the main thing that happens in the whole series? It's almost like I don't even feel like watching it.

No....it's not. Just to make things a little bit more clear, season 1 is completely (well almost) seperate from 2nd gig. Although characters do often times mention events from the first season in 2nd gig. I would say just watch the entire 50~52 episodes. There are lots of episodes that are standalone and are very powerful all by themselves. Personally I love both season of GITS, and had a great time with the second season....I think you will also if you spent time enjoying the universe of GITS....it's really easy to get lost in it.
