I saw the What anime costumes do you have? thread and thought it was a good idea, albeit one that wasn't very well executed by the OP. So let's try to have a thread that has some content to it as well.
To start, I figured people could say a little about themselves when it comes to costuming (naturally, I'll start it off with my answers): Do you participate in cosplay? Yes How long have you been costuming: About ten years now. I became interested in costuming when I was in university, which was also when I got into anime. What was your first costume: The first cosplay I did was at Anime North 2004 and I had two costumes: Hitomi from Escaflowne (not her school uniform but the dress she wears in Astoria) and Ryuichi from Graviation. See pictures below. Do you make/buy your costumes: I make them, though I prefer to buy pieces and alter them because I'm not the greatest sewer in the world, though I am getting better. What is the biggest challenge you've found?: With anime/manga-related costumes, it's definitely the fact that the outfits themselves didn't have to be designed to actually work in the real world. What is your dream costume (if money/skill was not a barrier): I have a few, actually. Yukari's fashion show dress from Paradise Kiss is a big one and I also always did want to do Jagara from Wolf's Rain but never got very far with my plans. (Feel free to add more things and I will answer them as well!) And finally, PICTURES! I will just link the images, rather than actually putting them in, since I have a fair number of them. Anime/manga-related costumes - Hitomi Kanzaki, Vision of Escaflowne - Ryuichi Sakuma, Gravitation - Tanpopo Yamazaki, Imadoki (well, really it's just the school uniform from Imadoki) - Mayura Seno, Alice 19th Other costumes (including some that I apparently don't have good pictures of ... I'll need to fix that) - Bellatrix Lestrange, Harry Potter - Renee Montoya/The Question, DC Comics - Princess Leia Organa, Star Wars - Phoenix, X-Men: The Last Stand - Delerium, Sandman - Cosima Niehaus, Orphan Black Thankfully I am planning to wear the last two to FanExpo this year, so I'll have the chance to get some pictures (Cosima isn't quite finished yet, hence why I don't have pictures, and Delerium is done as part of a group so most of my pictures of it aren't of me alone). [EDIT: Made the thread official. -TK] |

You beat me to this ^u^
Do you participate in cosplay? Yup How long have you been costuming: Specifically as cosplay, about 18 years. But making costumes of licensed characters? I think I went as Michelangelo when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. What was your first costume: As above, I did Mikey as a kid. In high school (where I start my cosplay timeline), I made both Sailor Venus and Pikachu for Halloween. My first con costume was Sailor Cosmos, though. Do you make/buy your costumes: Make. If it's a "real clothes" type outfit (i.e. not a "costumey" thing), I'll raid the thrift shops and modify stuff, but usually everything is made from scratch. I even piece together my own patterns from a variety of different patterns. What is the biggest challenge you've found?: Juggling accuracy with ability. Part of it is because a lot of costumes were never meant to exist*, and part of it because I just don't have the skills. *I've been cosplaying from Tokusatsu lately, so I haven't had that problem. What is your dream costume (if money/skill was not a barrier): I can't think of anything right now, but I would love if I could find a way to make my Journey scarf stand up behind me. The costume turned out amazing (pro-tip: use linen-style bottomweights instead of cotton, it flows much better), and my scarf is 13.5' long. I just wish the scarf didn't drag on the ground. I'll add a couple more questions, too: What's your favorite costume you've done: My aforementioned Journey costume. I actually got 2nd place in the costume contest at Seattle's Video Games Live with it this year. What's your favorite cosplay moment/moment: Back in... 2004, I think it was, I wore my Pikachu costume to Sakura-Con, because we had Ikue Ohtani as a guest. During the voice acting demonstration, she spotted my costume and was like "Pikachu?! Pika! Pika pikachu!" totally in a "You're not Pikachu! I'm Pikachu!" kind of way. When we got to meet her afterward, she asked to try on the head, and loved the costume. No pics, 'because I don't have them online at the moment. |

Great minds think alike. Also, I would love to see a pic of your Journey scarf, if you can get one. My reply for the new questions: What's your favorite costume you've done: Probably Princess Leia because a) I got recognized all over the place, b) it was one of the first costumes I did the majority of the sewing for, rather than having help from relatives, and c) see below. What's your favorite cosplay moment/moment: I'd be planning to do the Leia costume in a few years from now, when my hair grew long enough to properly do the buns. However, things changed when I found out Carrie Fisher was going to be a guest at FanExpo. So I rushed it together over a week of work (it's actually not quite finished yet because I need to figure out the belt and what to do about footwear) and got to meet her wearing it. She said it was lovely and that she was glad I was the one wearing it now, not her |
