I am sure I have read the lolicon chapter of this series, but I can't remember where.

I remember it pointed out that middle-aged men lusting after high school girls isn't pedophilia, although it is gross.

Is that because it's actually ephebophilia?

Productions like these make me wish there was more educational material presented in the west in more entertaining manners. Western scientists have to be so dry (though I know they don't necessarily want to be).

I didn't say none existed (we can also add novelists like Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan to that list, as well as Michio Kaku, who is for all intents and purposes a westerner), just that there ought to be more.

You can also arguably put the MythBusters crew in this category too, though I've noticed just as many people watch the show simply to see things get destroyed or blown up without taking in any of the science.

The concept's got my attention and I'm looking forward to checking it out, but it's quite the potential minefield they're going to be wading through.

Ephebophilia is a specific preference for teenagers bordering on exclusivity. If a middle-aged man happens to feel sexual attraction towards a teenage girl, it would just be called "normal"*. However, if he felt attraction only to teenagers and not to adult women - not even young women - that would be ephebophilia. By the by, even pedophilia actually clinically refers to a specific preference, not an individual attraction.

*Statistically speaking, of course. As a cultural abstract, it's obviously subjective.

Hmm, interesting. That would be quite the controversial statement in the United States and spell career suicide for anyone with high visiblity.

Psychology education comedy sets off so many warning bells in my head that it will be insensitive or outright offensive. There is more than enough media making fun of "crazy" people without adding anime to the mix. I haven't read the manga, though, so here's hoping that a psychiatrist (Japan: where even doctors write comics! Laughing) could approach this material in a sensitive way. It's not a given, though. Psychiatrists can be just as prejudiced about mental illness as everybody else, unfortunately.

That's my concern as well. These are very volatile, sensitive subjects and it could very easily, accidentally, become offensive. Especially since, regardless of our academic intentions, we're all still going to be somewhat influenced by the culture surrounding us, and Japan is, in my opinion, less culturally accepting and understanding of mental illness than many western cultures. But I suspect, or at least hope, that this last point is exactly what this anime hopes to address.

What would? An adult man admitting sexual attraction to a teenage girl? Perhaps, but only because America has a very, imo, warped and hypocritical view on sexuality.

Ephebophilia specifically refers to older teenagers, typically 15 to 19 years old. Meaning that attraction to 19 and 18 year olds fall under the same umbrella. It also means that being sexually attracted to an 18 year old isn't, clinically, really any different than being attracted to a 17 or 16 year old. Because your sense of physical attraction doesn't know or care how old (numerically) someone is, it cares how sexually developed they are (or aren't), and those stages vary between individuals. And while there IS a bit of a social stigma towards men being attracted to teenage girls, especially as the men grow older, when PornHub released statistics last year about their search and traffic data, "teen" (IE, girls that fall in the "ephebophilic range") was the single most frequent porn search term in the United States.

It definitely doesn't feel like just "a bit" of social stigma based on my experiences, but then again, I do live in a highly Catholic part of the country. Much of the local news I hear and read about regarding sexual offenders seem to be about people who lust after teenagers (whether for real, which usually amounts to stalking and/or rape, which I feel is not okay in any way, but more importantly, also includes those who possess or access teen porn, which the news ALWAYS calls "child pornography" and the consumer a "pedophile"), and they inevitably wind up on child predator lists and given restraining orders against anyone under 18.

I do think it's a problem that the stigma is suddenly removed if the object of lust is 18 or older, but this is not something that's going to go away for a long long time.

When I said "a bit" of stigma, I meant older men being attracted to legal teens in the ephebophilic range, such as 18 or 19, which, despite being legal, still holds a certain level of stigma. (It's gross, whatnot.) An attraction to anyone under 18 holds severe stigma, obviously. And this is where you run into discrepancy between cultural normalcy and psychological normalcy, because an adult man finding sexual attraction towards a (sexually developed) 16 year old girl falls in the same category as a man finding sexual attraction towards a (sexually developed) 18 year old girl - IE, within the spectrum of sexual normalcy and not paraphilia. It would only be paraphilia (ephebophilia, in this case) if the attraction was exclusive to teenagers. But, social and cultural norms are always going to trump science and statistics in regards to peoples' attitudes, so it's definitely still not anything to broadcast publicly.
