^ So is this saying that anime viewership has gone into a terrible decline?

I think we know that already without looking at the list Sad , but does say that in the 70's-80's, when anime was still considered "mainstream" but for kids, the mainstream kids' shows like Sazae, Conan, and Doraemon ruled the air.

Yes. Tv viewership in general has declined in developed countries but the drop has been particularly harsh for anime as not only has Japan experienced the usual diversification of the market when it comes to tv content viewing but they've also been facing a decline in the children population.

Oh dear god look at that decline, it's about time Japan starts embracing streaming on a mainstream scale for anime with second to none mobile compatibility and fast.

I say decline must really only have to do with television in general.

In any event, drawing lines between this and the type of anime that this site's users are interested in can only really be done in the broad strokes of general TV. What I'm saying is that looking at stuff like Sazae San isn't going to be a good predictor of stuff like, say Fate/Stay night, at least no more so than the fact that both are television programs.

You might have, but I had idea it was so steep and across the board. But I think it's probably more like what kutsu says, that the number of channels available since the 70s had shot from a dozen or so to thousands if including the Internet. Plus the number of children has declined. Because those same 'mainstream' shows are still playing and considered in the same light from what I understand.
