I want that background. I'd use it as a wallpaper.
I'm guessing that's the point. They do it all the time with Attack on Titan, after all, which is a grim, super-serious series that always seems to get silly, absurd promotions. |

There is literally a chapter where she attends a baseball game and explicitly mentions how boring it is to watch. I guess being out-of-character is "in" these days for anime

Just so out of character... I get that they're making a shameless crossover but still. At least Kuroki looks somewhat akward (In character) in the promo images.

Cross promotions really aren't in character for any character, technically. Do Attack on Titan characters shop at 7-Eleven? Do Frieza and his soldiers really dance for grape soda? Maybe it feels different because Tomoko is such a human personality, more like the lead of a novel than a superhero or some other fantasy type.
But in a way, this couldn't be a better match. From the very beginning, Watamote family names are all from the Chiba Lotte Marines roster... Kuroki (the pitcher), Imae, Ogino, all baseball players. And of course Tomoko's rival Komiyama is a Marines fangirl who stalks them online. If you want in-story justification, after Tomoko badmouthed the baseball players last time, they were the ones who found her passed out from heatstroke and rescued her, so she owes them.
