To be fair, I can't think of a single manga that could go toe to toe with the writing in some of those nominees, like Faith or Squirrel Girl.

Yeah, also no American comic book was nominated in any manga awards this year as far i can remember.

As this awards don't have a "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" award like in the Harvey Awards, it would be a surprise to have something as different from the usual comic books to be nominated in a American comic book industry award.
