Thank you for this very insightful interview. I love this movie and admire Sunao Katabuchi very much, it is obvious that he put a lot of energy into making the movie as authentic as possible.

I read this manga a few years ago on a Japanese-made site that allowed little-known manga to be seen in the West. I cried! What was most striking about the look of the manga was how easily the creator of it could use a few lines to draw a main character who looked kind, fragile, and gentle.

Then for that imaginary gentle person to suffer what she suffered! It was heartbreaking.

It was the perfect combination of style and theme to elicit an emotional reaction. I believe what this director is talking about is his effort to recreate that manga artistry in anime.
