Not sure what I expected. I also don't know how good that is where she lives, but she doesn't seem to be complaining. With socialized health care, I know I'd personally be able to live fine with that much.

Not sure if that's her amount before or after tax, but depending where exactly in Tokyo, and how you eat/save, travel and such...it's a decent amount, often with a roommate. Also, I guess if you rent a place with less functions (eg. shower). Rent alone ranges from $800~$1500 ish for a 1ldk (utilities not incl). A nicer place in a nicer area maybe like $2.5k...it really depends. Eating out and summer utilities can really add up...
