One thing (among many) that I praise GuP for is that they didn't make the Japanese tanks seem all that much better than how they would actually perform amongst WW2 American/European tanks. This is made especially evident in the movie when for instance the Type 3 Chi-Nu fires point blank at a Pershing's rear (typically one of the weakest armor regions) and pretty much does no damage to the Pershing.
Japanese tanks were rather terrible compared to most of their contemporaries and the GuP franchise doesn't seem to mind showing its blatant inferiority which is impressive considering how people (even now still amusingly) seem to think GuP fosters nationalism and that's a reason it's popular. Yep, nothing spurs nationalism than showing how terrible your own country's tanks were in a series about tank battles.
