So the setting and event is real, but are any of these real characters or based on real characters? I remember watching a documentary on the Mongol invasion a few years ago but don't recall any characters like them.

Clear contender for the best anime of the season, judging by it's debut and even more refreshing, it's one that finally focusing on a part of Japanese History that isn't the Warring State period or the Tokugawa and Meiji eras. I'm definitely staying the course for this one.
