Is Adult Swim/Toonami bad for first time anime fans to watch? They butchered Blue Gender and Rurouni Kenshin so badly it wasn't funny... should first time anime fans to these series use Toonami and Adult Swim as a guide to help them determine if they should get the DVDs or not? They may think that they are seeing the uncut version and shy away because often time sthe series' plot points are misused and chopped up. So what do you guys think of this?

I really think that Toonami/Adult Swim is pretty good. Besides, the edits are usually minor. If a series sparks your interest...one goes and looks up stuff about it. You shouldn't base whether a show sinks or swims solely off Toonami or AS. They're a good resource to see how you're going to spend your anime dvd fund.

I know, I was saying though, I read Kyle Pope Edit Lists, so naturally, there are some ridiculous edits (Editing out a shot of Marlene's feet) that make me furious as an anime purist. Althoyugh, I do realize CN contributes to many anime titles becoming popular (Yu Yu Hakusho, Inu-Yasha), but I really would enjoy less senseless edits.

The people at AS and Toonami edit accordingly. Naturally Toonami will recieve more action oriented shows and thus more edits, while AS will air more thought provoking ones like FLCL and Bebop, while airing more action shows with considerably less edits. However, with AS the edits are up to the anime's distributor and the heads of CN. You complain about how AS edited the feet shot, when in reality FunImation decided that, and there was only one edit in FLCL, that was that the blur covering the old mans genitalia, which was already there, and that was a decision from CN. But anyways, AS s a good source because, so far, they have had great programming with very little edits. As for Toonami, their edits occasionally dig plot holes in Kenshin, DBZ (their was a plot SOMEWHERE) and Hakusho. Really though, a better question is this: What is a better introductory channel that runs anime? ABC Family, WB, FOX or CN? I rest my case, the witness may step down.

I've yet to really get a good reason to what happened to "Blue Gender".
I've heard that Williams Street edited it or that Funimation edited it. I've heard that Funi loosely edited it, WS told them the edits were too loose, so Funi decided to edit all sexual material just to be safe and not edit things a third time. Some of the "Blue Gender" edits are just ridiculous because Adult Swim has proven they can show sexual material (look at "FLCL"). Whoever made those edits to "Blue Gender" should hopefully be feeling silly right now. But in any case, I feel that Toonami/Adult Swim has really helped push anime sales forward. People may complain about the edits made to "Rurouni Kenshin", but Media Blasters did say that sales of the DVDs jumped because of the broadcast. The more exposure there is, the more anime fans there are who will buy the series and the more series will be licensed. Anime fans may not like what network television often does to their favorite series, but it's a necessary evil if those series are to get the exposure that they often deserve. The true crime would be if the DVDs themselves were hacked to pieces, IMO. If people want to cry for butchered anime series, they should cry for series like "Yu-Gi-Oh!" that will never get uncut releases in this country. And if anime fans don't want to buy the true version on the DVD and be content with the edited TV version, that's their own loss. Finally, the Japanese themselves have edited some of their anime for TV. Should America be criticized for what the Japanese themselves do? |

Well cutting out those types of shots is understandable. By cutting that out it bought CN a few seconds of more run time of something more important. They do it in the best interest for the viewers (or what they think is in the best interest for us) or they have to make the cut because its too bloody or something. I mean would you rather see Marlenes feet or a blue getting shot to pieces? Dang, i wish i was a faster typer...2 people just posted before mine. And i bet I've been typing this longer then them. I feel so pathetic. |

I know, I know. I've posted that I LOVE Adult Swim because it virtually the only anime outlet showing lightly edited shows. I just think for how late the shows are on they could give them even a TV MA rating and people would still watch it. Isn't it targeted toward adults anyway?

It is targeted towards an older audience, yes, but the fact is it's still basic channel programming, same as South Park, the only difference is that CN has built a stereotype as a kids network, while Comedy Central is for older audiences, both make edits accordingly. CN has to shed the stereotype before they can even attempt a mature block. However, the Anime Network can show whatever they please because they are a limited, premium channel which is made specifically for anime.
CN is not such a network. Anime Network will never show Waynes World. Sci-Fi will never show The Golden Girls. Comedy Central will never show Face Off. LifeTime will never show The Man Show. All of the above have built themselves as a certain kind of station and cannot so easily show the above programs.Same as CN. Sorry if you don't get it, I was probably not clear enough. |

I dont see anything that can be consided bad about toonami or as, where else can you get 3+ hours of anime a day for FREE!!!

it wasn't adult swim's decision, Funimation did the edits on Blue Gender. i mean look at the wonderful job they did on DBZ. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?

All right snarky, I'll offer a rephrase: "Where else can you get 3 or more (I hate using the plus sign in a non-mathematical context) anime for free without violating copyright laws?"

I think Toonami and AS are great, that way i can watch long shows like yu yu hakusho and IY without wasting my money on so many dvds. I dont care if the dubs bad or if there are cuts, if they have to be done to make them tame neough to broadcast so be it. Its not like an anime has never been censored on japanese tv (hellsing, off the top of my head). They have standards to meet, and if its such an important work of art to you you're welcome to buy the dvds (which would make all those naime companies even more happy). And besides, the best cut they can ever make to blue gender is cutting it out of the line up. Its almost total crap and I cant believe anyone would even care if its cut (except maybe the few unfortunate souls who bought the dvds and are bitter).
