What a terrible asshole. He can always get Percy Beard to represent him, though.

He also runs Liberty City Anime Con in NYC. He does a good job keeping his name out of it but a WHOIS search of its domain name reveals it's owned by Chrono LLC, one of Kopf's shell companies

Good to hear the police were called at the time of the incidents. I hope this encourages others to take the same actions should similar incidents occur.

No, what he needs is to be tried in a court of law and that of public opinion. Remember in American you can be accused, tried and convicted by public opinion whether something is true or not. It use to be innocent until proven guilty.

I neither know this man, nor have direct first hand knowledge of anything he has said or done, but it seems that Americans are so quick to assume the worst in everyone or anything.

If this guy is arrested, and brought before a trial by his peers and is convicted, then so-fore he is guilty of the crime he is accused of, until then, everything else is an accusation, reinforced by whatever emotional sense of empathy or sympathy one has for the accuser.

I can see both sides of the story as a grandparent who had a grand child who was actually sexually assaulted, and another one who was accused of sexually assaulting someone else, where both cases played out in the justice system, and both unrelated events were proven correct. I've also first hand in my journalism career seen the fall out of someone wrongly accused of a crime they did not commit, and the results of a victim of a crime who was found not-guilty.

My gut tells me Kopf is likely guilty, but until I am sitting in a jury bench, I'll still maintain my objectivity.

I'm curious why background checks are not being used for ALL staff at these cons.
Only going by the information that ANN posts in this article, it would seem to me this guy has a pattern.

"Anime News Network has chosen not to link to this social media post due to the potential harm to the alleged victim. " If this directly relates to an accusation, then it should be made public.

ANN if it claims to be a News Network has a right to inform regardless of whether or not it agrees with the content.

Well said. I wish more people were as level headed as you.

We may have the right to link to the recording. But that also means we have the right to not link to it. Our editors exercised that right. One of the responsibilities of journalists is to weigh the potential harm in publishing material. Journalists who publish everything they are allowed to publish, consequences be damned, are unethical. This article went through an ethics check with an outside ethics advisor, they agreed with the decision not to link to the recording.

Furthermore, that recording may be considered "revenge porn." It's understandable from Kopf's point of view why he would want to make his evidence public, but from ANN's point of view, it is enough to describe the evidence.

Please note: I am posting after the fact and making assumptions about editorial decisions that I was not involved in.

There is also a vast difference between isolated incidents, no history of such actions by the accused, accusations with no credibility to the claims, and someone with a history of them over a prolonged period of time with multiple witnesses, incidents from multiple venues that are not related to each other beyond the fact they are conventions, actual filed police reports (even if the victim opted to not press charges), and claims by the accused he was never even removed despite the con clearly stating he was and is banned by them. Apples and oranges.

I am not saying hogtie and tar/feather every person at the drop of a hat as that does lead to innocent people being wrongly accused, convicted, etc. However, when there are either (or any combination of) multiple accusations by complete strangers over a prolonged period of time, multiple witness accounts, police reports, and a pattern of behavior I'm going by the adage of where there's smoke, there's fire. In such cases all too often the idea of "innocent until proven guilty" and claiming "objectivity" is really disguise for simply not believing the victims and slyly saying they're full of shit. Which is part of why so many victims don't come forward and/or pursue legal action.

Doesn't "end up in jail" kind of imply "after going through the necessary processes"?
